Here is an up-date List of the UK's Top 50 Best Selling Singles.
The Official Charts Company, (OCC), sometimes use lower Totals for Hits from 1994, 1995, & 1996. Sometimes they use higher Totals for those Hits. I indicate, (Brackets), the lower Totals. (This is because they compiled 2 Sets of Sales, for those Years - by working out the Singles Chart in 2 ways). As you can see, Boney M are the only Act with 2 Singles in the Top 10. Madonna has no Singles in the Top 100, as she has never had a UK Million Selling Single, & you need to sell 1,010,000 to even be at No.100. NOTE If a Hit reached the Top 20 in more than one Year, (in totally seperate Chart Runs), I indicate each Year, that it became a Top 20 Hit. THE UK's TOP 50 BEST SELLING SINGLES (To W/E 4th February 2012) [1] SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT/CANDLE IN THE WIND 1997 - Elton John (1997) 4,895,000 [2] DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS? - Band Aid (1984/1985) 3,670,000 [3] BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - Queen (1975/1991) 2,327,000 [4] MULL OF KINTYRE/GIRLS' SCHOOL - Wings (1977) 2,061,000 [5] RIVERS OF BABYLON/BROWN GIRL IN THE RING - Boney M (1978) 2,020,000 [6] YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John (1978/1998) 2,020,000 [7] RELAX - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (1983/1993) 2,005,000 [8] SHE LOVES YOU – Beatles (1963) 1,892,000 [9] UNCHAINED MELODY/WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER - Robson & Jerome (1995) 1,850,000 (1,395,000) [10] MARY'S BOY CHILD/OH MY LORD - Boney M (1978) 1,838,000 [11] LOVE IS ALL AROUND - Wet Wet Wet (1994) 1,831,000 (1,252,000) [12] I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU - Stevie Wonder (1984) 1,821,000 [13] ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE/EVERGREEN - Will Young (2002) 1,796,000 [14] BARBIE GIRL – Aqua (1997) 1,776,000 [15] I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND – Beatles (1963) 1,752,000 [16] BELIEVE – Cher (1998) 1,721,000 [17] (EVERYTHING I DO) I DO IT FOR YOU - Bryan Adams (1991) 1,690,000 [18] LAST CHRISTMAS - Wham! I'm sure that list is out of date, Will Young passed 1.8 million a while back.
But the reason I've bumped this is to ask about Elton Johns Candle In The Wind, I saw that figure of 4,895,000 a year back on buzzjack so again don't think it's the correct figure. I mean at the end of 1997 it sold 4,770,000, so nearly 15 years later it must be close to 5 million now surely?? I wonder if a 5 million figure will cemente its place as the best selling single for the forseeable future. |

I had no idea Chers 'Believe' had sold that many. I remember it being a massive hit, but 1.7 million?!?! Impressive

It would be interesting to know which people's individual fave and worst from the top 50 would be. My worst would be Barbie Girl, while my fave is I Feel Fine.

I could be wrong, but i'm not sure its a song that will generate much catalog sales. Its a morbid song, and surely if you liked it you would surely choose the original Marlyn Monroe inspired version?

The 1997 song was for a specific moment (why Elton wont perform it again and has only ever done so once.. at her funeral).. The lyrics are all about Diana, its a song for her .. its so incredibly unique as its a song that is solely for a specific period in time.. hence the name "Candle in the Wind 1997". Its one of very very few songs that when u hear it it takes u back to the very period that it was written for. Its the soundtrack of a momentous moment in time.
Its going to pass 5 million this decade probably. The best selling single of this century of the past 12-13 years is Will Young at 1.76 million. So for a song to break it its going to have to have final sales of upper reaches of 6 million. Whatever that single is. It's not as rare as it once was for songs to sell over a million as it was a few years back, but anything over 1.5 million has been out of the question, given "someone like you" can't even do it. It has worldwide sales of heading towards 40 million, given few songs can break 10 million, you just wonder if it will ever be done in the near future. I'm 25 right and I reckon there's a good chance I will be telling my grandchildren that the greatest selling single of all time was 'Candle In The Wind', which is ridiculous really. I wondering what can potentially knock it off and if it does will it happen fairly soon. |
