Film conversion to PAL or NTSC question
Orbitalzone
11-01-2002
Can someone either point me to a website or explain how exactly cinema film is transferred from 24fps to PAL 25fps and NTSC 30fps? I appreciate the differences in PAL/NTSC and I understand that audio pitch is increased but I would like to know more about this. If anyone has info or knows a site I would appreciate it.

I ask because I'm currently in America and I've noticed how jerky films on American TV look. I guess it is due to NTSC requiring 30frames a sec whereas the film was made in 24fps... Thus the jerkiness..... is this right?

Cheers

In the UK for 25fps they just run films at 25fps rather than 24fps.

In the US they do what is called 3/2 pulldown on fields of the image to get the correct ratio to give 30fps (well 29.9xxxx os something to be intirely accurate). I'm not sure of a web site that gives details of this.

Here's an article about 'Progessive Scan' which is used on some high end DVD players to compensate for the 3/2 pulldown on NTSC which AlanJ mentions.

It goes into detail about the transfer process.

(glad that someone replied with some links before he got down and typed out exactly how 3:2 pulldown, 3:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2 pulldown, and 4% speedup work)
