An online magazine (UniLad) makes a rape 'joke'

Quote:
An online magazine aimed at university students pulled a controversial and derogatory article about rape victims after a huge Twitter backlash.

The National Union of Students (NUS) has called for the website UniLad, which claims to be the "number one university student lad's magazine and guide to getting laid" to be pulled down over the article.

In an article titled "Sexual Mathematics" it stated:

"If the girl you've taken for a drink... won't 'spread for your head', think about this mathematical statistic: 85% of rape cases go unreported.

"That seems to be fairly good odds."

Quite undefendable think.

That isn't even a joke.

I don't know of the magazine, and don't know if this is the type of content that has come to be expected from it. If this is the kind of thing that is to be expected from the magazine then I see absolutely no problem with it - people should be able to enjoy any type of joke they like in the privacy of their own homes and minds. It is not for anyone else to censor it, no matter how distasteful. It is only those repeating the joke (OP, forms of media) that are causing offence in these circumstances.

This says it all really. Only an arsehole would publish this kind of "joke" and not expect a ton of abuse in response.

They brought it on themselves IMO.

I know a couple of people who follow that on Facebook.

It's basically by tossers, for tossers. I never normally subscribe to the mass hysteria about controversial jokes but the whole group in general is pretty unsavoury.

Sounds like something Frankie Boyle or Jimmy Carr would come out with.

I don't think either of them would go near a joke like that. Even if it were funny.

Wasn't Frankie Boyel who said about the gang bang in Scotland being like pass the parcel because of the layers of clothes? I think he probably would, hence how he isn't on TV now.

He isn't on TV because his show was dreadful.

A 'gang bang' isn't the same as rape.

It is a joke though. Being funny isn't really a prerequisite for being a joke, because what's funny is subjective.

The woman who works with them says that the entire site is satyrical in nature, playing on the 'lad' humour.

Whether that is the truth is up for debate I suppose.

Franky Boyle has actually condemned this joke apparently.

You can't just say any old offensive crap and excuse it by calling it 'satire'. She sounds like an idiot.

I had a little chuckle. It's not hilarious, nor does it offend me!

Who are really offended by things. Really offended I mean?

How can a joke about rape be anything other than offensive?

This

To have a 'chuckle' is quite normal I think, it doesn't make us bad people, probably quite the opposite.

The people who have to make it known loudly to us all that this sort of thing 'really' offends them are the people who we should be worried about. They have something to hide.

I suppose to a woman that has been raped, it could bring back bad memories. Or to her close friends and family. Maybe. But someone not connected to any rape victim at all, offended? Really offended?

Why would it offend someone like that? It doesnt offend me...

I don't see how you can chuckle about it. Offence aside, it's not funny in the slightest.
