It has just been announced that John Peel has died while on holiday.
This is sad news. He gave a lot to music without being sucked into the globalization of the industry. I will miss him at Glastonbury.

That is very, very sad news. He brought so much to world of Music, and this shows with him being the oldest presenter on R1. God rest his soul, and my thoughts to his family as well.

I just heard this on Real Radio. I am in a state of shock.

My thoughts are with his wife and family.

A great loss to them and to the world of radio and music.

Very very sad news.

They're playing 'Teenage Kicks' on R1, one of his favourite songs IIRC.

I am actually quite close to tears.

Legendary radio DJ John Peel dies

Veteran BBC broadcaster John Peel has died at the age of 65, while on holiday in Peru.

Peel, whose radio career spanned 40 years, was on a working holiday in the resort of Cuzco with his wife Sheila when he suffered a heart attack.

He was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and in recent years had also presented Home Truths on Radio 4.

Radio 1 controller Andy Pariftt said Peel's contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable".

Not even going to try to say how big a loss this is to British radio, music, and the nation as a whole. One of the great broadcasters of our lifetimes. He will be missed be people of all ages, from the young hopefuls trying to make it in the music business to the older listeners who grew up listening to his brilliantly judged choice of music.

Love and peace to a master of his craft.

I've not so shocked and saddened by a death for a very long time.

He was unique. A British institution. Will be very missed.
