Sony Tablet S

Overall, I am delighted with this tablet. Once I'd replaced Sony's laughable idea of software with far superior Android Marketplace offerings,I had a device that surpassed any iPad that I'd played with. However...

One of the main attractions of the Tablet S, for me, was the universal remote function. I've had to teach each device individually button by button, which got the job done... until I came to my Onkyo TX-NR609 AV Receiver. Absolutely nothing I have been able to do will make the Sony tablet learn the Receiver Mode command from the original remote. Yes, I've tried different angles and distances form the tablet, also different lighting conditions and length of button press. The strange thing is, most other buttons WILL map to the Sony from this remote, with no problem at all, Yes, the button still works fine on the original remote. The problem here is that the Receiver Mode button is quite important, and without this mapped to the Sony, I may as well not bother using the tablet as a universal remote, when using my Home Cinema set up. Which, as you can imagine, is hugely disappointing.

Anyone here had the same or similar? I'd love to know if there was a way to get past this problem.

Also, if anyone from Sony reads DS, please extract the digit and update the universal remote app so that it will allow actions, which Logitech with their Harmony range of controllers have been doing for years!

I have managed to programme all my 7 devices with no real problems. However, my difficult bit of kit is my Marantz receiver. It has 5 channel sound, which is why I keep it going, but there are keys that virtually no universal remote will learn. It is something to do with sending the equivalent of multiple key presses. The IR sequence is just too long. As the Sony Tablet cannot learn macros (I think the same as Actions you describe) these keys are un-learnable. Luckily the main useful keys can be learned.

I too wish Sony would issue a new release to program macros or sequences of multiple key depressions. My existing universal remote (using an ancient PDA with IR) sends series of keys to different pieces of equipment and then even tunes channels and volume levels. I cannot fully change over to the Sony Tablet as I cannot reproduce this YET!!!!

In the case of my button it would appear to be no different to any other single button. All it's doing is changing the setting so that further key presses affect the receiver. Adjacent buttons for PC and Blu-Ray map just fine.

The word I have from the Sony official forum, is that others have experienced this issue and is has been escalated up the tech support ladder.

I gather that this, too, is ow being thought about. What gets me, tough, is why no one considered it when designing the software. I mean, they had examples from Logitech and others, so they knew what the competition was up to... but it would seem they could not be bothered to build in obvious functionality.

FWIW, the devices I have mapped to the Sony are working well via its screen, and I love being able to edit out all those buttons that I hardly ever use. Now, if they can extract the digit and set up macros/ actions so that I don't have to keep swapping devices virtually, that would e a real boon.

It is a very good tablet - I tried one and personally prefer it to the iPad - my brother bought a German Import (from Amazon UK) and it is exactly the same as the UK version - so if you want to save yourself £80 go for this one:
