last time we took our cat to the vets for an unrelated condition, the vet mentioned that cataracts were starting to form. since then my wife reckons they have become more noticeable. How likely that it will end in blindness and if so how will he cope with day to day living?

One of our cats (15 years old) is in a similar condition. If he lives long enough, he will eventually go blind, but blindness in cats isn't nearly as hard as for humans, as their other senses are much better developed. A blind cat shouldn't be allowed to roam outside, though. Surgical treatment is available, but apparently it's very expensive. There is no medical treatment, and no way of slowing the development of cataracts, unfortunately.

Not with my cat but my dog has steadily developed cataracts. At 17 hers eyes are all clouded over but she still has some sight. Not a lot mind but she is coping very well with it.
