my cat Milley, has been hit by a car we rushed her round to my vets who gave her a full examination she has some feeling in one back leg but has no feeling in the other leg or her tail. Her bladder seems ok and the vet thinks it could be a pelvic injury but because Milley, was still in shock the vet didn't want to give her any sedatives so they could take an x-ray. They have taken her in and will give her some pain killers and will monitor her over the next 24 hours. Nerve damage looks very likely to and a major concern now is whether or not she can still go to the toilet. Having seen her and the paralasis in her leg and tail I'm feering the worst.

what makes it worse this is now the 3rd cat i've had thats been hit by a car.

It must be so worrying - but the good thing it you were able to get her to the vets quickly and she's now in the best possible care. I do hope Milley will be ok

thanks every one we've just heard back from my vets and the x rays have revealed Milley has 3 fractures of her pelvice and a dislocated hip. At the moment there is still no movement in her tail so we still don't know if there has been any nerve damage. The vet said it is possible that the internal bruising and other damage could be causing the nerve problems but we're not going to know for a while yet.

obviously can't be sure but I think my other cat Murphy has sensed that some thing is wrong.

we phoned up the vet this morning because of the weather she very kindly took Milley home with her so she could make sure Milley, gets her pain relief injections. Milley, has had a comfortable night and will go back to the vet tomorrow where futher accessments will be made as to what to do next. The fractures and hip dislocation are repairable but the nerve damage is a big concern although just doing a little research on a few different web sights and people have said nerve damage doae heal in time. The other concern is also if her ability to go to the toilet has been effected .

I think the vet needs to wait for all the swelling and inflammation to settle before being able to assess for nerve damage. As you say, some nerve damage does heal in time but it can take months. Poor little Milley, I hope she'll be alright in the end.

Hi OP,

some years ago we had a similar thing happen to one of our cats. We'd been out or the day and when we got home, Brian was laid under a chair by the back door and couldn't get up. Could move to a sort of sitting position but his back legs and tail were totally none moving and unresponsive to touch. Got him to the vets where he stayed for 4 days. They think he'd been hit by a car (although they weren't sure as he didn't have the scruffs on his claws like they usually do). He'd broken his pelvis straight through the middle, snapped the head of one if his femurs off and smashed it, broken the other leg and a couple of bones in his tail.

When we got him home, he had to be kept in a crate for 6 weeks. We borrowed a large dog crate from our neighbours. He had a litter area in there. After about 4 weeks he could walk but not very well, after 6 he was jumping up on furniture and stealing food from the work tops. He always had one leg shorted than the other, but apart from that he was fine and could get around no problem. The nerve damage did take a while to heal properly- he was alright at the front, but his back end looked like a drunk for around 4 months.

Not sure how veterinary stuff has moved on since as it's about 14 years since it happened. He didn't have an operation as the pelvis they reckoned would heal in it's own time and the head of the femur was so badly smashed that it wasn't possible to put it together again. His other leg could have been plated if that was the only injury, but because of the pelvis break it would have put too much pressure on it. The femur formed a "false" joint which is what made his leg a bit shorted than the other.

So there you go. He made a fullish recovery from a bad accident and got back to his normal self within 6 weeks. Amazing the power of recovery they have. Hoping your little kitty is on the mend soon.

I really hope she makes a full recovery.
Would it be possible to enclose your garden so that the cats can no longer get out? I did this last year after taking on a deaf cat, it was relatively easy and did not cost a fortune. Sadly I think that there are just too many dangers out there on the roads these days for our cats to be safe roaming the neighbourhoods.

I saw Milley today and she was very pleased to see us it appears the damage although bad is not as bad as first thought . The hip joint is not quite dislocated and I think they just want to leave it for the moment because she's only a small cat the vet didn't want to push the joint back in in case it causes more damage. So I think later on they will do some surgery to repair it . The great news is that she's now able to wag her tail is eating and drinking and more importantly going to the toilet. We should be bringing her home in the next day or so when she will then be confined to 3 weeks cage rest and then we'll see what happens next.

with all the bushes and trees around the back fences it would be pretty impossible to increase the hight of the fences or put a border around the top to stop them jumping on top of them. and besides no matter how cat proof you make your garden they'll still find a way of getting out.

My cat was hit by a car 6 months ago and dislocated his hip and lost some of his tail.
He had to stay in for a whole month / and not jump around so he was confined to one room for 2 weeks and he hated it.
His hip did come out again, but it healed as they do and he has a slight limp today.
But he is a changed cat and stays in a lot more and it has taken him all this time to get over this accident. Hope your cat recovers as well as mine.

again thanks, Milley's still at the vets right now so we're still waiting to see when we can bring her home it may be because ofthe seriousness of her injury they may just want to keep her in for another day ot two just to keep an eye on her hopefully we'll get a call some time today telling us what's going on.
