Dog toys
As an owner of a 10 month German Shepherd whose toys now last 5 mins, I find myself buying toys from the local pound shop instead of pet shops. They all get destroyed in the end anyway, I know Kong toys are more durable but my dog prefers squeaky/soft toys.
Where do you shop for dog toys? |

I have a 14 month old German Shepherd and toys don't last her very long either. I buy her teddies from a local charity shop for around 30p each. She has had lots of squeaky ones from there and it doesn't matter if she rips them up as they're so cheap.
She has one that has survived the cull that she carries everywhere that was 50p from a car boot sale. |

We get most of my collie's toys from the pound shops too since no matter how much we spend, they rarely last a day. He also loves anything squeaky and always looks for the squeaker as soon as he gets a new teddy. He loves tennis balls too and I managed to get him some squeaky ones that have actually survived a few months. I think they were made by the same company that makes Kongs.

My toy poodle (so not a large dog!) destroys anything and everything. Soft toys are a no good, even ropes get destroyed eventually. He's not a fan of the tough rubber toys and tears through the ones that aren't tough rubber. I used to get laughed at in the pet shop when I buy extra tough toys for my little poodle! I don't bother with most toys these days, just stick to tough ropes and bones.

My Staff-x-Lab will only bother with balls and ropes - tennis balls only last seconds, I have to get the solid rubber type.
He prefers ropes mostly though - I found someone selling about 50 feet of thick, soft rope, like the toys are made out of, only not coloured, at a car boot sale last year. Got it for a fiver, and all I do is cut off about a metre or so at a time and tie 3 knots in it. The smaller dog (a 6 month JRT-x-??? that we rescued last month) likes me to make him a 'rat' out of a comfort blanket that came with him. A bit like a handkerchief mouse, but bigger - he'll rag it around until the shape falls apart, then bring it to me an wait expectantly until I turn it back into a 'rat' for him.

Great stories!
I think I may purchase a roped toy or two, see how far we get.

I have a 7 year old Golden Retriever who prefers soft toys but destroys pet shop ones in minutes. My daughter bought him a cuddly rat from Ikea childrens dept. and that has lasted longer than any other toy ever and at £1.99 is a bargain.
