Does anyone know what the RCA connectors marked L&R "surround out" next to the speaker terminals connect to?
Do they connect to a second amp for another 2 channels?
Or to a surround sound decoder?
The output from this connector is not enough to power a speaker.
There is a button in the front marked "surround"

If you own one I would appreciate your help as I've just been given this amp and speakers but no manual and would love to try out the surround option.

Sometimes phono connectors are used for something other than a line level signal. This is one of those occasions. The sockets are being used for speaker connections. Give it a whirl.

Yes I did try to connect a set of 8ohm speakers I had lying around, to the phono sockets, even toggled the surround button in the front but there was no response from the speakers.

They are most likely to be line outs to another amp to run surround speakers. It won't be a 5.1 system as the 933 is only a stereo amp.

Some 5.1 receivers have these so you can upgrade the system to a 7.1 configuration.

I downloaded the manual and checked before replying.

It definitely states that those phono sockets directly drive a pair of speakers i.e. there's no additional amplification required. It also states that the speakers should be 8Ω ~ 16Ω

The manual is on hifiengine.com

As regards being 5.1, that was never claimed. It is simply "surround" and not even Dolby Pro-Logic.

Thanks for the advice, and the link to the manual. As I have already tried to connect a second set of speakers to the phono outputs with no sound from them. I can only think that the amp Is faulty.

There is a 'surround sound' switch on the front that can be switched on/off, this needs to be switched on when the surround speakers are connected, I'm assuming you made sure this was in the on position when trying the speakers?

The surround speakers will only work on content that is stereo, they will not produce sound if the content is mono.

I tested the speakers with the surround button in both positions and have come to the conclusion that the amp is faulty.
The input signal I assume is stereo as it was connected to the RCA audio out from my SKY box.
