Can anybody tell me please if it is possible to connect an iPad2 to a TV (maybe a "Smart" TV?) when in a video chat via Facetime or Skype (with the TV acting as a monitor)?

Thanks

If you have an Apple TV then you can wirelessly mirror the iPad screen to a TV, or there are various adapter cables available to suit most AV connectivity scenarios.

It's an ecosystem so you are meant to buy an AppleTV.

I use my Apple TV and it's a fantastic device and can be had for £80 new on eBay and the likes.

If you install XMBC on it then it can do almost anything including playing all video formats and catchup services.

Yes thats by far the easiest way but certainly not the only or cheapest way

Don't you need to jail break it first though?

You can buy a cable which allows you to connect the iPad 2 to the TV through HDMI. I bought one at the Apple Store with my iPad 2, it works fine.

It plugs in to the dock connector, and has a HDMI socket and another dock connector at the other end (so you can keep on charging). Then you just need a HDMI cable to connect between this, and the TV.

Hope that helps.

Does it not output at 4/3 instead of 16/9 and only work in certain circumstances?

Android devices will have some problems too but maybe less so, having standard connectivity.

If you can find a hmv store near you, before they all disappear, the one near me were selling the apple hdmi ones for £10 each, normaly around £30 to £35, before they closed. Bargain.

Beware the ones on far east non-apple ebay listings that do 5 in 1 options, as they dont work well with the 5 firmware, I was warned.

You can mirror everything from your iPad 2 at 4:3 but if the app supports it (netflix, iPlayer, 4OD...) then they can output at 16:9.

is the apple TV just a small black box, with inputs and a HDMI output? Or am I missing something here.

What advantages does this offer over plugging a ipad straight into a tv with a ipad2/HDMI cable?

The Apple TV connects to your telly via HDMI. But it connects to your computer/iPad/iPhone etc. wirelessly.

It depends upon what you want.

If *all* you want to do is connect the iPad to your TV, it's obviously a lot cheaper to simply use HDMI.

If you want the abilities of an Apple TV anyway, then the advantage is that you can also use that to wirelessly mirror the iPad on the TV.

I wouldn't buy an Apple TV just to connect an iPad to a TV... I doubt many would! But, if I already had an Apple TV, I would obviously use that rather than HDMI from the iPad.

So its basically a media streamer?

Stream from your iPad, computer, etc., plus it has its own apps for playing iTunes videos, Netflix, and so on.

Edit: A similar device (without iDevice connection) would be the Roku.

I read that page before posting. Just wanted to make sure I hadnt missed something. Thanks for the link anyway. I have been looking at WD TV live. Not sure I really need one to be honest. Then again I thought I didnt need a tablet.

It's not something I'm bothered about, myself, as I can already stream stuff from my PC to my PS3/360, plus use the PS3/360 for Netflix and more (Sky on the 360, iPlayer on the PS3, 4oD on both, etc.). If I wanted to hook my iPad to my TV, I'd just use HDMI.

It's a good idea though for people who don't already have a console or something else which can stream.

The Apple TV is of course limited in what it can play, but as mentioned earlier you can Jailbreak it and install XBMC, which opens it up to a lot more stuff.

It is indeed. But assumes you are using iTunes on your PC and/or want share content from an iDevice.

We've got an Apple TV - wouldn't have bought one originally, but since the new, smaller ones came out for £99 its probably just about worth it. Its pretty good for looking at photos off the desktop upstairs on the tv, or streaming music through the main stereo, or watching film trailers and renting movies. It just depends on whether that's the sort of thing you'd look to make use of.

Thank you very much everybody for your interesting and helpful comments. However I'm still unclear (for example with the Apple TV) if I can use Facebook/Skype this way from an iPad2 to the TV? Would be nice if a family wanted to "live" chat visually with other members of the family far away and would find it easier watching the whole thing from the TV rather than being crowded round an iPad.

If you have an iPad, with an Apple TV, you can use Facebook / Skype on the iPad, and simply mirror your iPad's screen on the TV. So for example, sit on your sofa, use your iPad to type etc, but view whatever is on the iPad screen on your tv.

Have a look at this page.

Great video showing apple tv mirroring with an ipad2 here
Another for the hdmi cable here

I use the hdmi cable for mirroring the ipad2 and it mirrors everything very well.

Alongside the industry standard HDMI (and MHL) cables DLNA is the connection standard for wireless media.

I can forsee the Blu-Way alliance meta-morphing blu-ray players into full blown DLNA wireless network devices. They already do exist in a more base form.

Thanks everybody again!

I've been looking at those clips and am torn between AirPlay (wireless) via use of the Apple TV. Being wireless does this mean neighbours can tune in too for a looksee?

and

The digital AV adapter direct to TV via the HDMI cable which also has the ability to re-charge the iPad2 at the same time.

help!

P.S. I just noticed I, earlier on, mentioned Facebook when, of course I meant Face Time.......d'oh!

No.
One consideration for the apple TV would be whether you want all the other stuff that it can do as well like playing music, showing photos, youtube, film rentals etc. Wireless is always going to be more convenient than wired but there is the expense consideration. Also apple are rumoured to be on the brink of releasing v3 of the tv box, possibly at the ipad3 presentation in March. So you could either look for people offloading v2 boxes cheap on ebay or go for the new one.
