I have a TV in the bedroom and would like to put a bathroom, ceiling speaker in the adjoining en-suite. The TV has component out and headphone sockets. The best sound would obviously come from the component out I guess so does anyone know if it's possible to buy just a ceiling speaker with the L and R inputs? Or could I just stick component plugs on the end of the wires? I assume if I just get a mono speaker it'll handle stereo ok?

This wouldn't affect sound coming out of the TV right?

The only ones I've been able to find are the typical speaker cables.

Thanks.

Component is a video connection and any connection on a TV will be an input not an output. . To drive a speaker you will need some form of amplifier. A cheap pair of stereo pc speakers will do the job if you can remove the drive units and just use the amplifiers. Using mains power in the Bathroom is not safe. If the TV has Red and White RCA phono outputs you can connect the powered speakers to these otherwise a scart adaptor will give you the audio out you need.

Thanks Graham.

Ah - I mistook a set of component-type outputs - there is indeed a red and white RCA phono (plus a yellow video).

So I need a in-ceiling bathroom speaker (pref with a built-in volume control?) that is powered (that's ok as I can run power into plug socket in loft above) that will take input from RCA phono outputs. Will get looking!

I tried a PC speaker using headphone socket but that kills the TV speakers.

You just need an adaptor for the PC speaker to convert presumably a mini stereo jack to RCA phono.

That is much more likely to be an input as well. It must have a label by the sockets saying Audio Out or Line Out. It is rare for a TV to have a video out as well.

I would doubt you will find a powered speaker for ceiling mounting. I don't know of any. Anyway far safer to keep the mains out of the bathroom. So maybe put the amp up in the loft and run speaker wire into the bathroom.

.
Both my Sony HD TV's and the SD Toshiba before it have Stereo Audio Out and Composite Video RCA sockets. A setting in the menu lets you output a fixed level or volume controlled.

Mine is used to connect a uhf modulator.

If you have your heart set on active in ceiling speakers have a look at Genelec or Polk, they can be expensive, just take care in protecting the electronics, you should be able to devise something to stop the humidity from affecting them.

Balls - you're right.

Looks like the easiest thing to do is carry on turning the TV volume up when I get in the shower

Thanks everyone.

Turn the volume up or get a shower radio.

A scart socket on the TV should still have a line level audio output.
