The barrel of apples is/are on the table.

It's all but the barrel regardless of content. So it's:

The barrel of apples is on the table.

Which sounds dreadful!

Ahh it annoys you

I'd have never guessed...

No problem. The difficulty is that often people look at the words pair and couple and think of them as abbreviations for pair of skaters or couple of people for example. This isn't particularly far fetched and it explains why the example cited previously ("The couple is/are buying their first house") can sound a little cumbersome.

The way Phillip and Christine have wrapped the show up for the last two weeks has for some reason reminded me of Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton signing off at the end of the movie about two warring breakfast TV presenters (ironically titled "Daybreak"):

"Goodbye."

"Goodbye!"

"GOODbye!"

"GoodBYE"

"And a goodbye from both us"

"Yes, it's a BIG goodbye from BOTH of us"

Etc into the credits.

Thanks Tabitha for putting it better than I am currently.

Next week is Valentine's Theme...even though the day is on 14th and not 12th, lol

I still predict there'll be a double elimination somewhere...

I'm waiting for them to invade The Sunday Night Show.

"It's goodnight!"
"Night night."
"Bye"
"Cheerio for now."

etc.

Its being repeated on CBS Drama (channel 149) everyday. In the next week or so we possibly see Charlene's best acting ever - when she was kidnapped by the evil photographer Roger!

As you say she also has a guest appearance in the new Dallas show.

Probably right she went - but I will miss her as she is so charming and bubbly!

They were diabolical weren't they? I hate this idea of making them all wear colour co-ordinated clothes - like one is red jeans and blue top, another is blue jeans and red top. They look like Butlins boys.

And their singing? They are even worse than the last time I saw them on TV and they were dull then. They have no strength to their voices at all. I think they try and put a bit of effort into it but they end up leaning forwards like ape men and just look stupid.

I enjoyed the skating though!

Going well off topic I know, but it is noticeable (to me anyway) that US and Australian sports commentators usually refer to teams in the singular (e.g. 'Australia is ahead in the test series', 'Dallas is not expected to reach the Superbowl') whereas we Brits almost always refer to teams in the plural (e.g. 'Man City are the new favourites to win the Premiership').

PS - Rosemary must go!

She is - I once attended classes for a short while and my email address is on their database, so I get a weekly email telling me how wonderful Rosemary is doing and asking me to vote (I don't!) But yes, she has a huge database to canvas votes from.

I don't mind One Direction being on the show, but why the ridiculous bigging up before and during the programme? Please don't assume we're all going to enjoy a bunch of vaccuous little boys trying to out-pose each other on the stage. Credit some of us with a bit of taste, please!

I've noticed that Americans refer to bands/ pop groups in the singular form too, for example "One Direction is a boy band" rather than "One Direction are a boy band".
