Shorter shows, and fewer of them, means they have to spread their basic costs over fewer shows and make less profit. The profit funds iTV doing other things. Less airtime also means you lose money, and have to spend more making something else to fill the gap - which not get as much revenue.”

Making it longer is imo the big mistake C4 made with Big Brother. Yes, it brings in more money, but it makes the show worse which ultimately loses viewers.

Yes, good point. And then there are all the things that people get into when there's an in-depth discussion of the ratings. Share and 5-minute breakdowns and so on, if there's a real quest for clues.

And how large is the difference compared to past changes in DOI's ratings.

There's no point in trying to figure out why if the change isn't large enough to need an interesting cause.”

Think It's down about 15% on last year which is a similar drop that X Factor & BGT had for their last series. DOI raw numbers were lower than those 2 shows though but even so it's still getting about 7.5m which is decent enough. The drop is enough that ITV can't ignore it & do nothing although the show is not in danger of being axed.

There was a 15 min breakdown analysis in the Ratings Thread in the TV forum earlier this week. Interestingly it showed that whilst Call The Midwife is having an effect, a bigger impact is earlier start times (the audience increases significantly after 7PM).

Mathew is getting the comments on his skating that claim he is well up there in the male stakes and , if his back is alright, he ought to be able to do bigger lifts than Ray. Sebastien is already doing some of the more difficult moves that made Ray and Chris stand out. And, for once, there's actually a race between at least two people at the top after Sam, Hayley and Ray had very limited competition.”

I'd agree on Hayley & Ray but Sam did have competition from Laura especially & also Chloe. I think it would have been a big shock if either Ray or Hayley hadn't won but not if Sam hadn't.

Ithink the number of breaks for adverts is the primary cause . So many people complaining about the frequency of them.
I prefer this panel of judges they are constructive not destructive Jason was just personnel and nasty .

They just go on and on and on, and with all the ad breaks it tedious. I record it and watch it when its about an hour in and I finish round about the same time.

Much less of a shock, but there was evidence that Laura had a vote problem, and Chloe lost momentum - and that was how the judges and VTs and her own words were spinning her chances. if I bet I would have gone for Sam - more so if I knew he would redance Riverdance - which was probably the best routine that series - and they had taken out flying and given Laura someone who didn't choregraph to work up both a show dance and a bolero.it just didn't look as close as Clare and Kyran or Chris V Suzanne throughout the series and the final didn't really look in doubt. Even when Suzanne and Clare both beat their competition in terms of marks in the final, there was still a doubt who would win - last year i just didn't feel that way.

I record it now too - skip through a couple of routines as well as all the adverts and VTs

The pros need to have more involvement with the their routines, SCD is as much about the pros and is it about the celebs imo.

I think it's because you have Christine who could not present if it slapped her in the face, Boring celebrities and also Louis Spence who tries to say too mayn s's, and Katerina who is just plain stupid. Rosemary 7.0 - need i say more. Itv deserves the low ratings and it may be taken off next year if it continues

Christine doesn't have that big a role on the show so I can't imagine it's got that much to do with her. And I'm not going to defed Katarina's mark fo Rosemary last week but other than that she's been fantastic & hasn't put a foot wrong IMO.

Also although the ratings are down I'd be very surprised if ITV dropped it - 7.5m is still good & nothing else they would replace it with would likely get that much.

I'm another who records it, and who FFs past much of it.

I think ratings are primarily down due to the worst list of celebs ever! I don't know who hardly anyone is..I have very little interest in who wins......compare this list to the recent success of strictly which had lots of well known names.

Yup, tonight marked the night when I stopped watching. And typical that someone bashes their head when I do. LOL. It's more entertaining reading the thread on here than watching now.

Exactly.

If the calibre of celeb was higher more people would be watching.

Simple as that.

There was never a golden age when DOI had big name celebs. The very nature of the show means the pool of talent is that much smaller than, say, SCD. This seems one of the better recent years in its terms.

Just laughed at my husband's comment "they can throw in as many twists as they can but the only way they are going to get the ratings up is to have someone give birth on the ice and they call in the the midwife"

I suppose call the midwife isn't for everyone either. I tried watching it but didn't enjoy it but obviously there are an older age group who do. It is good to have choice

This. Have asked people in the past who they think should be on the show & nobody ever responds with even a couple of realistic names. This year's line up is much better than last year's IMO with no Wags etc.

Will be interesting to see if the ratings pick up in a couple of weeks time when Call The Midwife is finished & with next week's double eviction surely the show should be no longer than 90 minutes.

The judges line up has changed drastically since last year. There is only one judge from last year on the panel. They don't really disagree much with each other and there is a lack of drama here I think. The controversial comments from Jason are missing- didn't he tell a girl that she had legs like tree thrunks last year

Personally i don't miss jason's nasty personal comments but I don't think that's the sole reason myself.

Having said that i do wish judges would be a bit harsher in their critique sometimes. They were quite harsh to Kerry last year for her lack of solo skating but Heidi isn't called up for it in the same way, they just pussy foot around it saying well it would be nice to see a bit more of you skating on your own.

Once you've seen one amazing move, you've seen them all really.

Agreed- it is sooo boring this year, and I do like some of the skaters but what has turned me off it ( and it happened with the last series of scd) instantly there was a clear favourite with Jorgie (harry mc fly in scd) and its just predictable every week now who is going top of leaderboard-

You've got a good point there. I actually didn't see much of the Ray Quinn year because it was obvious from day 1 he was head and shoulders above the rest of the contestants.

I'm actually enjoying Seb, Chico Chemmy and the Coronation Street guy more than Jorgie and Matt. Not because they're better skaters but, I'm enjoying watching them improve every week.

I don't think the Jennifer cut head incident has done them any favours. The bad acting just made them all look ridiculous.
