Hi i'm thinking about getting a apple ipad how do i connect it to the internet? would it take a dongle? i haven't got a wifi home network?
if i cant do that then it's no good, i dont want to be tied to a contract either.
Another thing is i;d also like to be able to watch tv on it
but apple dont take flash so would sites like demand 5 and 4catch up, and itvplayer work?
Thanks

I'm not sure if it has the capability for a dongle as I am not too familiar with iPads but if you don't have wireless I wouldn't bother. Dongles are not an ideal substitute in my opinion.

You'd be wasting your time with any tablet without a wi fi network at home. If you can overcome that one, watching all the catchup services is not a problem, they all offer free apps to allow you to do this, no flash required. There are some cheap broadband deals about, you need to sort that out first though.

That wouldn't last long when watching video though!

There is an area of DS dedicated to Tablets. While not calling into question the advice given so far you may get more responses if you ask for your thread to be moved to the appropriate technical area.

Why don't you have WiFi at home?

Who is your ISP? Do you just not have a WiFi router, or are you using mobile broadband instead of cable/ADSL?

If there's no way of having WiFi at home, then you'd need a 3G iPad. This adds £100 to the cost. You would then also need a microSIM and some sort of data tariff... you can get PAYG or contract. You'd use a lot of data though watching TV...

BBC iPlayer: free app, plus the website works (HTML5)

Demand 5: free app

ITV Player: free app

4oD: free app

TV Catchup (streaming Freeview): free app, plus the website works (HTML5)

The demand 5 app only works on wifi on the iPhone, possibly the same on the iPad. If you plan on using the iPad to watch catch up tv then you really need wifi. Most 3G data caps would only give you a few hours streaming a month.

Ah, good point about some on demand apps requiring WiFi. That makes the lack of WiFi even more of a problem, even if it didn't eat a lot of data.

You could get a MiFi device and then just connect to it via Wi-Fi from the iPad or any other device.

This will also get round the issue of some apps being WiFi only.
