I recently picked up first Star Wars Omnibus of A Long Time Ago... which includes issues 1 to 27 of the original Marvel comics which ran from 1977 to 86.

I had read some of these when I was a kid, a lot of the artwork was forever archived in the back of mind somewhere and not having laid eyes on them for 30+ years, it was quite surreal re-reading them all over again.

The stories are ok. Fun without being spectacular, but they do manage to capture that early Star Wars fever. I can see me picking up the other issues, although I never got round to reading them as a kid (apart from the comic adaptation of the movies).

Anyone else had a go at these?

Yes, I felt exactly the same, reading a couple of the later volumes in the series.

I'v got the whole set. (7 Books)

I used to work in a book distribution centre, and one of the perks of working there was the 45% discount on all books to members of staff.

The stories following the ROTJ movie seem to lose the plot though, and Darth Vader is replaced by an evil cyborg/human female named Lumiya (Who's weapon of choice is a massive force whip!!!)

Some of the new characters were good though namely Kiro and Danni. Not forgetting Plif the Lasbee, and Jaxx the green bunny rabbit.

I never liked the early issues ( all the Infantino ones , his art was horrible ) I'd say the issues between 1980 and '84 were the best .

Mike Golden drew an amazing issue for Star Wars,(He drew the first few issues of Micronauts too), his art was in a league of its own.

Howard Chaykin drew an amzing issue as a set-up to TESB, set on Hoth too. I used to like the Al Williamson strips set between ANH & TESB.

Some of the art in the later issues seemed ambivalent.
Luke in some stories had long hair, and in others had short hair.
The costumes for the characters changed wildly as well.

Luke in an all white outfit, with a black under shirt.
Even at the time...(back in 84) i was confused at the direction.

The better artwork was always kept for the annuals books. Some of the later comic art was appalling.

Do they include some of the great back-up strips that the comic featured, like Warlock, Deathlok, Starlord, and Tales of the Watcher?

Those initial issues of Star Wars saved Marvel from bankruptcy.

Did he do the 'pirate' episodes of Star Wars set at seas?

I loved Micronauts, such a great series

I take it that means the strips I named are not in the reprint books. Shame. If they were, I might have searched the books out. The back-up strips were often better than the main Star Wars strip.

No, the pirate sea story was drawn by Infanto, mentioned by an earlier poster. His art was detailed, but I didnt like it either! There was another story about a lone bounty hunter from the clone wars, im sure Jaxx the green bunny was in that too. (its so long ago!), there was a panel of art showing the clone wars, which AOTC used as a reference for one of the movies battle scenes.

The pirate sea story was when the Millenium Falcon had landed on a water-covered world, where big sea serpents are being controlled by radio waves by an underground race to wage war on another race. I recalled it included a villainous scrap-metal dealer who scavenged the wrecks of spaceships that crashed in the sea. He had a big, old-fashioned wooden galley ship, which ended up getting destroyed by a giant sea serpent.

The bounty hunter you allude to was Valance, the cyborg (half-man, half-robot) wasn't it?

Yes! Well remembered! Im sure his story was drawn by someone other than Infanto. Couldve been Chaykin again?

This thread is stirring up some long-forgotten memories from reading the ROTJ comics when I was a kid (especially the force-whip woman)

I think a visit to Amazon to get me some books is in order. Any recommendations?

I received a gift of two DVD Discs containg 600 Digital Star Wars Comics.

They are great and the quality is fantastic, far better than I ever thought they would be.

I dont know how much they cost but I would say there are worth every penny.

Are they legal? Officially endorsed by the publishers?
