Android Apps for tablets

Hi all,

We got our first tablet (SG Tab 10.1) at the weekend and the thing I've noticed most is that quite a few of the apps we've loaded (especially games) are either totally incompatable or just not designed for the bigger Tab screen - no real surprise. So are there many tablet-specific apps out there as yet and if so can anyone recommend some?

Specifically I'm looking for kid-friendly apps preferably with an educational slant.

There are some apps out there that just scale (badly) to full screen for Android tablets, but quite a few that don't. I've rarely had any problems (Vega running Honeycomb)

My 3 year old loving the puzzle "Wheres my water" - its a physics/water based game, and its definitely developing his analytical skills.

YoDesoft have a jigsaw puzzle range that scales well to the tablet form factor.

There are a bunch of the Dr Zeuss books available, and they look (and sound) fantastic - interactive books that can read it all for you, and you can click on parts of the pictures .... very good.

I'll have to write down a list of what I have that seems to work perfectly.

Zen Pinball THD is written for tablets.
Angry Birds / Angry Birds Rio/ Angry Birds Seasons is free. They scale well.
XConstruct is a bridge building type puzzle game
Cordy: written for tablets I think and is a platformer Sonic the hedghog type game
Brain Cube HD is a simple(ish) puzzle game

I seem to remember that last time I was on the Android Market they had a subsection for tablet apps. I can't get on it now to check though.

If you're checking Android Market on your Tab it "should" only show you apps that are compatible, if the developers have specified the details correctly when they set up their apps. Unfortunately, Google have added more specifics over time, so it's likely older applications will have less stuff specified, so there's a chance they'll say they work with your Tab when they won't.

Just remember, you have 15 minutes to get an automatic refund if it doesn't work as you expect.

Download Tablified Market HD, it gives you links to all the tablet apps from the Android Market, saves you trawling through looking for them, luckily developers are getting better and making more apps now that are suited to larger screens, some are still poor though and lag behind Apple in this respect.

Trip Advisor was just updated yesterday to suit tablets and is now way better!

The official Sky app for the TV guide scales very nicely. Kids will be addicted

I use gReader to read my RSS feeds. It is excellent on my tablet. Have a look at the screenshots on the android market.

I have detailed some of my favourite Tablet apps here
http://djleekee.wordpress.com/2011/1...oneycomb-apps/

If you have updated to the latest version of Honeycomb there is now an option to either 'fill the screen' or 'zoom the app' if the apps ahvent already been optimised for a tablet!

Hope that helps!
