Why did M.I.A decide to sell-out so spectacularly for?

Seriosuly, I would imagine she has alienated much of her core fanbase by deciding to transform into Madonna's very own little cheerleader This is the same girl who bitched that Jay-Z "sold-out" in an interview just two years ago and now look at herself! I never thought I would see her do something like this.
Thoughts?

Appearing on the Super Bowl and flipping the finger brought her more mainstream attention than she could have dreamed of.

It was an excellent decision.

I don't really like MIA or her antics but she's actually quite fun in the Madonna song. I don't see the harm.

I doubt she knew she'd have to dress as a cheer-leader for the music video until after she recorded the song.

Hasn't she always been a bit of an embarrassment? I remember her views on the London riots (from the comfort of her boyfriend's US mansion).

I don't see the harm either. M.I.A. was never that reputable, she's just an urban pop/ indie artist with a funny style. I like her a lot, she's playful and experimental enough for her genre, but it's not like she was ever an alternative and anti-mainstream artist. Her biggest hit is 'Paper Planes', don't make it out to be anything but one more urban pop track with good production, please

Her song with Madonna is fine, it's not that generic. If she had collaborated with Katy Perry, I would say she has sold out, but collaborating with Madonna is hardly a decline in quality if you're just an electropop artist

she was musically. 2 critically acclaimed albums, and a very good/rated 3rd one. Personally I thought her music was naff. You can be political and genius (stevie wonder) but your tunes have to be able to be played on radio ie have a good beat. She was quite anti mainstream IMO, you couldnt really play her stuff on radio. Paper planes was more about the lyrical content than the production, I thought it was ok but nothing special, she seems to be more of the thought provoking lyricist than a big beats singer.

and to say Madge WANTED to work with her and nicki is a compliment and an excellent sales perspective. Madge is big sales + the superbowl is massive exposure. Shame she pulled the 'finger' stunt. Wasnt needed, and I actually didnt really notice it. I was watching the spectacle more. The blurred screen made it obvious something bad just happened (silly America, freaking out over a boob and a finger They cant come on the moral high ground after their civil rights track record in their own country...seriously... a boob v the civil rights movement...ah...yeah....)

M.I.A. built her reputation on being creative and interesting and not producing boring, generic pop songs so being on Madonna's poor, generic song doesn't feel right to some people.

It doesn't bother me but I do think after the first 2 very good albums she's lost her way a bit and I hope she can reproduce the quality of those albums in future.

ps. To iseloid: Her songs definitely have a beat (!?) and not being boring enough to be radio-friendly is what some of us like about her songs.

Actually M.I.A said 'I don't wanna say Jay Z sold out', she was talking about him in comparison to Nas, saying that Jay Z's commercial global successes and being a major media figure due to his relationship with Beyonce etc. shouldn't make him be seen as a better artist than others in his genre.

To be honest, I was shocked when I first heard she would be featuring in Madonna's single as I didn't think she would be the type to appear in commercial pop to boost her profile, and also I don't think she's really big enough for Madonna to use her to make her music 'current'. Would hardly call her a 'sell-out' though, however it could be argued that her 'giving the finger' stunt at Superbowl was a tacky way of trying to appear 'edgy' and non-conformist despite being on stage with 'the Queen of pop'.

MIA hasnt sold out at all....sure Luvin is far, far, far from Madonnas best material (also known for thought provoking songs, theatrics etc like MIA is known for) BUT Their main duet is on B-Day Song on the MDNA album so i cannot wait for that definitely...always wanted Madonna and MIA to hook up to do something crazy...and I hope B-Day Song is that song...Luvin is a song that is fun and catchy....but as many say...its not "Madonna" its not "Nicki" and its not "MIA" but its fun for the SB

And working with Madonna is more of a launch into popular consciousness....loads and laods of people didnt know who MIA was...and now everyone knows who she is....just for the wrong reasons

But as some people posted...if MIA decided to work with Katy Perry, or Rihanna or someone who is mainstream right now....i would call that more selling out by definition....but with this...i think she can expand her fanbase a lot more while keeping a lot of the core (like me) in there too! While Maya wasnt the standard of Arular or the masterpeice that is Kala too! It was still great! and i cannot wait to hear what she delivers next too.

Its really not that big of a deal, any music that sells IS commercial, because its selling.

Is putting your middle finger up a big deal in the US? I didn't even notice that she did it until the 'uproar', to be honest.

no I mean you hear stevie wonder's you haven't done nothin' and its got a cracking beat, with good lyrics. Thats what I'd like from MIA. She's not bad, I think radios ignore her TBH. I mean We found love/What's my name beats. Regardless of genre you can still have songs that are brilliant and can hit a wide range of people without being radio friendly (Matt cardle: starlight/Lauryn Hill: Doo wop etc). She doesnt have to be boring to be good for radio IMO.

and going out with Beyonce didnt do much for either of them really, they were both massive in their respective genres before they even met. Her point is a bit odd....Jay had brilliant albums and respect and big sales before he met his wife. He's had more of an influence on her than the other way around.

But MIA hasnt sold out at all really.

M.I.A. is not like Stevie Wonder, I'll give you that. But I think we'll have to agree to disagree on radio-friendliness .
