Got my hamster cage in my bedroom on a set of drawers. Well the mice have been sneaking in the cage and stealing all his food. Had hammie in his ball last night and took him back and when I put the light on a mouse was squeezing through the back bars. Got 4 traps with peanut butter but they seem to bypass them to enter the cage,

Now in the night I was woken by an almighty commotion and lots of mad squeaking. Got up and my hamster had a mouse in his mouth and had killed it. Well done. Probably got fed up of the buggers invading his space and nicking his food

Nothing really. Can you move to Pets please mods?

Been worried that the mice may attack my hamster actually.

I just can't believe how bold the mice are, to enter a cage with another much bigger stronger rodent there. They must smell him! Suppose their desire for food prevails. Happened when we had the other hamster and the cage was downstairs too. Used to think she had a very big appetite!!!

Oh before anyone says this is made up and they can't squeeze through the bars well they can, seen it with my own eyes.

Mice crush their skulls to get through tight gaps.

Sounds like you've found your mouser though lol.

Hope he kills a few more then. He was going to eat it but I got it off him as they're riddled with germs.

traps will be useless if they have an easy to get to supply of food available. You need to remove their food source before traps work.

Well can't leave my hamster without his food can I? Still can't get over their audacity.

Hang his cage from the ceiling on a hook, Then they may go for the food on the traps.

That's no good, he will then have the problem of flying rats to contend with if he does that.

We have no rats. AFAIK. You never get mice and rats together as mice are afraid of the much bigger rats!

I am confused, are these mice your pets too? If not, I'd consider calling pest control.

No they're unwelcome visitors to our home.

try meshing your cage with some mesh that is quite small, or moving your hamster temporally in to a large plastic storage bin with lots of holes drilled in the the roof. really useful box's are a good brand and can be found in staples at around £12 go for the 64 ltr or 85 ltr ones to give enough space, they are see through like aquariums and you can move him back when the mice are eradicated from your home.

smaller mesh or a temporary tub as mentioned above may help, if the mice can't get to the food in the hamster cage, your traps may well start working

make sure the holes you drill if you get a box are only around 3 or 3.5 mm at the most
i house my mice in boxes like these, the size of the holes make them difficult for the mice to chew and make them bigger (at least from the inside)
i don't use RUB's i use the cheaper "Wham" boxes which aren't as secure as they don't have locking handles on the lid, but if you weigh the edges down with a book or brick, hammy won't get out, with the mice, they can't lift the lid anyway, but i don;t give them anything that lets them climb high enough to be able to push the lids.

water bottle is held on with the wire and a 9mm hole drilled in the side of the box to fit the spout through is perfect.

pets at home sell free stands for wheels for around £3 so your ham can still have his wheel while in the tub - just make sure to used a bit of electrical tape or similar to hold it in place, or else they move & rattle against everything.
