Sony video service
Been looking around my Ps3 last night, well the store part and found that Sony have a film rental service. i thought that would be nice until I saw the price. Over £4 to rent a film, they must think we are crazy.
sony would do good to lower their costs certainly now with Netflix in the country. |

I have this service via Sony Bluray and films vary in price. New releases are around £3.50 to £4.50 whilst older films can be less. These prices (which I beleive is expensive) is similar to other PPV services. ( Sky B.O, iTunes etc. ) The service was previously called Qriocity, but changedto Video Unlimited recently. I watch most films via LoveFilm Instant and new releases via Lovefilm disc at home service. I have used the Sony service a few times for new releases if I really want to watch something straight away. Quality is excellent on both SD and HD.

Also the PS3 has the advantage that the film can be downloaded rather than streamed ..........useful if your connection is too flaky for consistent streaming

I've used it on my Blu Ray player and they do seem to have the new releases, but they don't always stay for long.
The picture quality I thought was rather excellent for both SD and HD. At the moment I'm still using my Free £15 sign up voucher, but couldn't say whether or not I would add funds to the account at a later stage. I did ask Edd Uzzel at Sony about the prices when Netflix arrived and he just replied that they offer a different service and the price reflects the costs of the license they pay to show the latest films at the same time as they are released on Blu Ray and DVD. |

I'm willing to bet that at some stage the Sony video service will probably offer an unlimited streaming service, just to compete with Netflix, which is also now available on the PS3, as well as of course, Lovefilm as it also improves what you can stream in their unlimited service to compete with Netflix too. Of course, that depends how successful Sony's service is though, if people seem happy to pay Sony's prices then it wont change, but if they aren't, Sony will have little choice but to follow Netflix and Lovefilm's pricing but that would probably require re-negotiating with the rights holders.

I don't think I will bother then, £4 for renting a film is a bit much to be honest, even if it is new. £2 maybe, but that is about it.
I can go to blockbusters and rent them cheaper. Lovefilm wins again |
