Well i am more of a "casual fan"....but i am so so glad she mixed it up a bit for 4! It is my favourite album of all four studio albums. And I personally feel that at this stage in her career she needed to shake her style up a bit by incorporating elements of retro funk/soul, old skool sounds and a mix of some contemporary sounds too and lyrically, a far more mature direction...and whatever the heck RUn The World was haha!

But i hope she continues to push different areas musically definitely.

No im so happy that after waiting 8 years she released a solid album that showed she was deserved of the praise and accolades showered on her especially after IASF which was just down right rubbish 6 grammys for a very average album.

4 is her best musically and as an artistic statement brilliant album.

Not really, she has a strong fanbase and has gained loads more this era! particularly after Glasto over here.

I am baffled that such a mediocre album, which was more a random of collection of songs (some very good to be fair) did so well out of the Grammys, where as a much more creative and focused body of work has been pretty much snubbed by them!

it is really baffling as to why 4 which is artistically better musically stronger has been ignored and why not massive sales is my guess.

It's like an LP full of album tracks where she forgot to record any actual singles.

And it shows - poor single peaks WW and album sales of 'only' 2.1m WW (500,000 of those from the UK), which in my opinion is really rather poor for some like Beyonce.

Saying that I loved it. It really is one of my very favourite albums of 2011; and if she can record album tracks like this and singles like those of I Am it would just be perfect imo.

It's a bit like Beyonce singing songs from the 90s. It wasn't pushing any boundaries or doing anything that hadn't been done, was a bit like she was just doing something for herself rather than trying to compete, as if she planned on getting pregnant and this was just a stop gap of songs rather than a big, tourable album with hit singles.

I think it's her best album to date. I love that she doesn't just release album after album...she takes her time and I think the time between each album release is perfect. I hate the way Lady GaGa, Rihanna and others just jump from album to album with no break. It doesn't allow time for any growth. I love the album and she has done with it what she wanted to do. She said before she released it that it would be about the album as a whole and that she wouldn't really be focusing on singles very much. Most importantly, the critics loved it. It's all very well releasing an album that sells well and following the record labels orders...but I think at some point in an artists career they need to show that they can produce an incredible body of work which isn't pandering to the record labels requests. This is what Beyonce has done with this album...to critical acclaim. Each album has been different and I think a lot of people were expecting another 'I Am Sasha Fierce' album, which I'd say her label probably wanted too. She's been there and done that though...it was fantastic but time to move on. I'd say her next album will be back to her RnB roots.

No way!! It's my favourite of her albums because it's got more up-tempo and powerful mid-tempos than usual! There's End of Time, Rule the World, Countdown, Love On Top, Best Thing I Never Had, Start Over... Six high-impact songs. That's more than I usually have.

Thats what made it great she merged old skool with modern sounds and created an album as much for herself as us the songs were personal plus it was different in the way it went slow to big it build on itself and is not just a showcase for great singles and album filler like her other albums its her best most thought out and strongest body of work.

I was surprised but a good kinda surprised because it was a bold, mature album which showed a different side to her. She dealt with issues a married woman goes through and not talking about bubble gum teenage love in her 30s. The thing im worried about is that she'll have to revert back to her winning formula for album number 5 to appeal to the masses... personally id like her to stick with this direction shes going in.. makes me respect her a lot more as an artist.

i dont think she will. the fans loved 4 live, as her roseland gig showed. to say she did nearly no promo for this album, its sold very well, especially after it leaked. with no big hits, 1m US sales is quite good 7 months on after its release. She'll be touring and I hope she puts out 2 more singles (end of time and I care - there are youtube live clips of her gig to use as videos.) She tends to do whatever she likes in terms of music, and seeing as she's mainly an r&b star, she sells massively. Contemporary r&b at its best with her IMO. 4 had many hits, but her being pregnant kinda ruined the whole strategy. Also Love on top should've been a single after the VMAs when it was a hit on itunes. That would've pushed her sales for the album, it could've hit number one too - and after the show, it was the only song she had that could've been a hit on nearly all big radio formats (mainstream, urban, AC). Shame. that was a BIG opportunity lost. Then I would've put out Countdown as a single, and performed at the grammys. Followed by Party, then end of time, and 1+1 and finally I was here.

I used to love Beyonce, but I HATE her new material. She is so talented with an incredible voice, saw her LIVE once and she was amazing, but I think she's completely sold out. Churning out awful lazy uninspirational work. Such a pity as she showed such initial promise.

Eh???
4 is incredible. Not really selling out. Its very inspired (fela kuti, whitney, MJ) and you can hear it. She's gone back to her roots. I hope her next album is even crazier. Proper Fela stuff.

I don't understand how anyone can hate this album. But then everyone has different tastes I suppose.

erm...YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!

Seriously if she does do that then Beyonce will definitely zoom up my list

And hopefully with her next album too she will not need to release "Independant Woman song vol 5.0" for a commercial lead single...just release the craziest song of the bunch

good points. but love on top still has a chance to become a hit right?
