Bye bye Uncle John
This is just a wee note to bid a fond adieu to John Peel the much beloved radio 1 champion of musical diversity, and king of the voice - over, who died in Peru yesterday. I remember listening to Uncle John's 'Festive Fifty' when I was about twelve. 'Love Will Tear us Apart' by Joy Division was always in the top 3, and 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones was there or thereabouts. Maybe its a bit different than Girls Aloud but, what the hell, I love the X - factor too.
Bon Voyage John |

i'm still in shock today.
Some of my friends highest accolade was that their record was once played by John (chart success would never have carried the same kudos). One of my friends bands got 'made' by John, and the fella still tours and makes a living out of what he likes best even today. (The band were never big, but he earns a crust and pays the rent, due to John). I've got so many Peely stories, as have so many people, and those stories are precious to each and all. My most precious is me my step dad meeting Peely a few years back. Me step dad's a big Peely fan, but, by his own admission he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, it took him till he next heard Peel on the radio to twig who he had been talking about motorbikes and crap festival tea to. God love him. I wonder if they'll play teenage kicks at the wrong speed for his send off? And then play it again, back to back, 'cos it was so good. Realshocks, hope you got some of those 'festive fifty's on tape. Really am very saddened by this. Condolences to Sheila, John's (grown up) children and his grandchildren. |
