The pre-order was a mistake in terms of the single. Things have clearly been messed given the song is charting in most other places-the UK is one of her major markets and whoever agreed to the release programme should have read the UK chart rules first.
Other factor's are at play, although whilst the charts are marketed for particular age group, the success of Adele and the Goyte track for example ( which I think is fantastic).does prove that a wider range of music buyers will download or buy CD singles (if there is one).
I like the song, but by comparison to the previous lead singles from (almost) every previous album, it's weak (although I thought the weakest single from True Blue was Live to Tell and the best was kept till last).
I suspect it is unlikely to make the top 20 all things considered-the damage has been done. As someone else has said, she is most likely more realistically a album/touring artist which seems to be Beyonce is heading and I suspect Lady Gaga will follow suit within the next couple of year's.
That's where the money is made and usually how music history remember's you in term's of achievement.
