Buying singles is a young fan thing, Madonna is 53 and is now an album and touring artist, I didn't expect the single to chart that great, it has actually done better than I thought. On the other hand going on the itunes pre sale her album went to number 1 in 53 countries so her album should do well.
Yeah the removal from itunes didn't help either, |

Well it looks like she will be lucky to get in the top 10 at this rate. I thought it would do better

You know your singles a flop when it can't even reach number 1 in a country where an audience of over 100 million watched it being performed.

If so Madonna was about to top the US itunes when the album deal ended and the track got removed. It was re-added to US itunes this afternoon and has risen super fast. Its now at 10. So there is every chance she'll be number 1 within 24 hours. |

i had hoped that the single would preform better, although, i suppose it was wishful thinking. the itunes album pre-order completely mucked things up though. its doing much better in the us, currently #9 on itunes there.

To be brutally honest, the song is terrible and doesn't deserve to do well. Can we move on to the next single already please and forget this mess of a song?!

Which part of 'the single is available for free during the album pre-order' and can't be counted as a single sale don't you understand?

I have the radio on most of the day (radio 1) and havent heard it yet. That wont help. Mind you at 53 ( a whole 2 years older than me!!) she is harddly in the target audiences sights

The part where 'you can actually buy it outright' is pretty difficult to understand tbh
I am sure the song will chart, but it will not be a number one. Neither Radio 1 or Radio 2 have playlisted the song this week i'm hoping this is because the official release is a few weeks away yet and not the start of some ageist policy. |

But why would you buy it if you already have it? That's one of the problems. I preordered the album from itunes so got the song, my order did not count as a single sale. A CD single appears to be due for release on 2nd march this is not confirmed also the remixes will appear on itunes nearer the time.

Not everyone wants to buy an entire album, and so there is still a large proportion of the music buying public who could of bought it. Unfortunately, its not appealing to anyone but fans.
I've been on a couple of Madonna sites over the last few days, almost everyone took up the itunes preorder deal. There are not many people that will buy it twice. I am not going to. I'm a fan and think the song is weak for a lead single but i do think that in a few weeks the song will do ok once the CD and remixes appear. |

Madonna had a #1 only 4 years ago. She's not really that much older now.

To be fair as a massive fan...i am mainly in it for her albums anyway...always have! and didnt expect Luvin to do massive over here considering it is mainly Stateside endorsed anyway! And yes taking off of itunes etc was a killer.
I think the song itself is stronger performed live and/or with video too tbh and ideally i would love her to release the second single perhaps in March (film video soon etc) which will reflect the vibe of the album much more than Masterpiece and Luvin (for her film and Super Bowl respectively) while Masterpiece is lovely and Luvin is catchy and retro....neither represent the album overall. Besides I would find it even better really if she released promo videos/singles really rather than "sold" as such and focus on selling the album which is set to have a massive first week of release already...cannot wait! |

Other factor's are at play, although whilst the charts are marketed for particular age group, the success of Adele and the Goyte track for example ( which I think is fantastic).does prove that a wider range of music buyers will download or buy CD singles (if there is one). I like the song, but by comparison to the previous lead singles from (almost) every previous album, it's weak (although I thought the weakest single from True Blue was Live to Tell and the best was kept till last). I suspect it is unlikely to make the top 20 all things considered-the damage has been done. As someone else has said, she is most likely more realistically a album/touring artist which seems to be Beyonce is heading and I suspect Lady Gaga will follow suit within the next couple of year's. That's where the money is made and usually how music history remember's you in term's of achievement. |
