Question about changing phones
BlizzardUK
09-02-2012
I have a Tesco Mobile OneTribe phone, but due to a broken screen I decided to get a new Tesco mobile called Xperia Mini Pro. I bought this from the Tesco website with the sim in it, a PAYG type phone. Can I keep my existing number by just using my current Tesco SIM ? Or because it a much fancier phone (for me anyway, such as 3G and WiFi) than my previous one do I have to use the one that came with the phone ? I wasn't sure if there is a difference on what they can do or what comes installed on them.

Thanks for any advice.

You can still use your original sim. It makes no difference which sim you put in it. You'll be able to access all the phone features no matter which one you use.

To keep your old number just use your old sim.

It depends on your current SIM, older Tesco SIM's have the same problem as older 02 SIM's not being 3G enabled.

Have a look at the current SIM, if it doesn't have 3G on it and/or a serial number that starts 8944110063 you should ask Tesco Mobile CS to swap your details to the new SIM, they will transfer any credit from your old SIM as well as give you bouns credit if it was part of the deal on your new phone and your current number to it.

If the essential features of both phones are the same then swapping SIMs should work OK. You might run into problems swapping a 2G SIM into a 3G phone. At best it will reduce the 3G phone to 2G only working. At least that what I found last time I did it.

One thing I haven't tried is swapping a PAYG SIM with a Pay Monthly SIM. Can't see any reason why that won't work though.

Thanks everyone. My old SIM starts........

8944110064...

With code : 3GTPP5

The SIM in my new phone starts.........

8944110065...

With code : 3GTPP5

The only difference is the "5" after the 6. Is this a big deal ?

EDIT : Just saw this page http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=334951

How easy would it be for me to transfer my old number over to new SIM ?

Ring CS on 4455 from the handset or 0845 301 4455 from a landline if you want them to swap it over, just tell them you are concerned that your old SIM might have issues with your new handset.
