16 [11] = Myra McQueen = 9.70% (Round 2)
The top ranked character who was eliminated in Round 2, just missing out on a place in the top 15 is Myra. Last year Myra just missed out on a place in the final and finished in 11th place, this year she dips 5 places. I used to like the character of Myra, however the character IMO has taken a severe drop in quality. As with Mercedes, there is just no development there whatsoever and all she seems to do is stick her ore and interfere or be involved in a ‘comedy’ storyline which isn’t funny. The best moment of the last year for Myra was in Hollyoaks Later where she accidentally takes drugs in a club.

15 [NE] = Barney Harper-McBride = 2.03% (Round 3)
At 15 is the highest ranked new Fresher from last year – Barney. Barney is really a character used for comedy storylines and light relief – cited by many who ranked him highly as having some fantastic one liners. I think Barney is possibly the biggest surprise in the vote this year; he sailed through Round 1, qualified from Round 2 and finishes in the top 15. He hasn’t been involved in many hard hitting storylines (as a lot of characters), however I think the fact the character has shown potential and is very witty has put him in good stead. Over the X Mas period, Barney’s money was cut off, so 2012 should see the uber posh student trying to ruff it a bit.

14 [NE] = Dodger = 2.05% (Round 3)
At 14 is the highest placed of the Savage clan (and by quite some way). Dodger is a character who seemed to come into the show and wasn’t really liked (as is the Hollyoaks way). However since then he has got more popular and worked his way into people’s affections. The character hasn’t really been central to any of the big storylines that have gone on eg the Silas plot, and for a lot of the time he spends getting his top off. However Dodger does have a likeable charm and I think a lot of his popularity comes from him not being overly exposed and being on screen all the time. It would be good if he did get a more central storylines (instead of being just relegated to comedy one night stands) and hopefully this happens in 2012.

13 [14] = Theresa McQueen = 2.56% (Round 3)
Climbing a place from last year is Theresa McQueen – a character who either seems to be loved or hated, however manages to get to a very respectable 13th place. She is possibly the luckiest Hollyoaks character, having been Silas’ target on about 3 different occasions, however always managed to survive. She’s had another big year, not only being involved in the Silas plot in Hollyoaks Later, but also becoming embroiled in a love quadrangle with Ethan. She’s also become involved with Will Savage after several false starts. Personally I don’t mind the character and whilst I didn’t really agree with the logic behind her shooting Calvin or the weird relationship between Theresa and Warren (which seemed to come out of nowhere), however I think the character does have some potential, and this year finishes as the 2nd highest of the McQueen clan (after Jacqui).

12 [NE] = Cindy Longford = 4.13% (Round 3)
At 12 is Cindy, who becomes the highest new entry this year. Cindy is one of Hollyoaks’ longest serving characters, although has had a number of years out of the show. On the outset of tournament I actually expected Cindy to be a definite for the final, however she seemed to struggle in every group she was in. Eventually though she managed to finish in a respectable 12th place in the 3rd Round. Cindy is very much a bitchy character and out for what she can get, however the character is very good at comedy scenes. For me it would be good to see the character become embroiled in some bigger storylines and possibly have a storyline where Cindy takes centre stage.

11 [07] = Cheryl Brady = 5.57% (Round 3)
So Cheryl is the 3rd character from last years top 10 to fall. She was so close to making the final round, however just falls short. Cheryl is a character who seems to be constantly on screen, however doesn’t seem to have had a big storyline herself. She was on the outskirts of the Silas/ Lynsey storyline and has been on the outskirts of the Ste/ Brendan storylines. The character is good at comedy storylines, however it would be good to see the character play the central part in her own storyline – I guess with Brendan being about she is likely to feature heavily through 2012, however be interesting to see which direction the character goes in.

10 [08] = Amy Barnes = 540pts
Kicking off the top 10 is Amy, who slips 2 places from last year. Amy is a character who is the last member standing from the Barnes family, the rest have either departed or died. I guess Amy’s biggest moment in the last year (or so) I guess was the Lee/ Leanne/ Amy triangle and then the Lee/ Dodger/ Amy triangle. However in terms of major storylines the character has had a bit of a quiet one. Recently too another triangle seems to be developing with the entrance of Ally and with Ste and Amy vying for his attention. I think Ste and Amy have one of the strongest friendships on the show and whilst they may have had a very rocky past, they work very well as a unit and both Ashley and Kieron work well together – so hopefully 2012 will see more of that.

09 [18] = Rhys Ashworth = 549pts
Rhys takes a huge climb up in the Favourite Character Rankings this year, last year he was eliminated in the 2nd round, however this year he manages to make the final round. Rhys is the last man standing from the Ashworth clan and is one of Hollyoaks’ longer serving characters. The last year has really been a good year for the character – although an unlikely pairing to begin with, Rhys and Jacqui are one of Hollyoaks most popular characters. This also helped by the fantastic Jacqui/ Gilly rape storyline – not only bringing those 2 characters to the fore, but also Rhys who was torn between Jacqui and Rhys. The three hand episode also brought the character of Rhys to the centre of the show and Andy Moss was fantastic in the episode. Hopefully we’ll get a greater exploration of the Jacqui/ Rhys relationship in 2012 and they’ll start to appear a lot more in the show.

08 [44] = Doug Carter = 555pts
The biggest climber from last year is Doug, who ascends up the rankings a massive 36 places and into the top 10. Doug was included in the 2011 vote, although had only just started appearing again after leaving from being a thief and was eliminated in Round 1. However since returning he has become one of Hollyoaks’ most popular characters. Doug’s been aparty to quite a number of the bigger storylines including the Mercedes/ Riley wedding, the Silas Murders and at Christmas he got his own episode where the character was contemplating suicide. Personally I really like the character of Doug and think PJ Brennan is good at doing both the comedy and drama. In the semi-final round, Doug was almost eliminated in Round 3, however managed to just secure enough votes to stay ahead of Cheryl. Here however he finishes in an impressive 8th place and from last year has made the biggest positive impression on voters.

07 [06] = Nancy Hayton = 573pts
Dipping a place from last year is Nancy who is currently taking centre stage in the show (about bloody time too). She’s been in the show for years now – seen the death of her sister, Jake Dean go mad and also worked with everybody’s favourite serial killer – Silas. Nancy however hasn’t really hasn’t really seen a big storyline for herself as the central character until recent weeks... or should that be week – where her marriage to Darren is the main focus. Jessica Fox (IMO) is a great actress and its a shame that she (along with quite a few characters) haven’t had a great deal of screen time, or storylines to get their teeth into. Hopefully the possible wedding to Darren is just the start of 2012 for Nancy and we get to see alot more of her.

Wow Doug's had a massive climb

06 [37] = Lynsey Nolan = 589pts
Just sitting outside the top 5 is the 2nd biggest climber from last year; Lynsey, climbing a huge 31 places. Lynsey was eliminated Round 1 last year and its easy to see why as barring pining over Malachy wasn’t given a lot to do. Since then however she was involved in the biggest storyline of last year and was the only character to see through Silas. The mind games between Lynsey and Silas were absolutely brilliant and well played by both Jeff Rawle and Karen Hassan and made for some fantastic television. The character managed to survive being a target from Silas and defeated him in the end, since then Lynsey got a job as a hospital cleaner and saved a patient with a DNR – naughty, naughty. She also has good chemistry with Doug and hopefully 2012 will see more scenes between the too Dougsey shipping anyone?

gutted doug only got to 8th though im happy he's in the top 10 but i think he deserved at least top 5 , maybe top 3 but oh well. im happy he's done so well , a great character and played by a great actor. he still needs to be in the show more definatly.

i also think lynsey deserved higher than 6 to.

05 [03] = Ste Hay = 668pts
So Ste slips 2 places, however still remains in the top 5 (by quite some margin over 6th place). Over the past couple of years the character has seen a bit of a complete transformation, from straight chav to a stylish gay male with a snappy haircut. I think its good to see a character have some form of progression and maybe you could reason down the severe change to finally being able to express himself without feeling conscious or scared of what everyone else thinks of him. However I can see why some aren’t a fan and see the character now as more of an extension of Kieron Richardson – Personally I don’t agree with this and can still see moments of the old Ste such as the not being able to read etc. His relationship with Brendan is really the moment Ste became hugely popular on the show and turned him into one of the biggest and main stars of the show; this relationship is over now, despite flickers and Ste looks set to move on possibly with newcomer Ally – depending on his sexual preference. Either way it does seem as though 2012 will be a bit of a different year for Ste compared to basically being in a violent relationship.

04 [04] = Darren Osborne = 736pts
Next up is the first non-mover of the year as Darren neither rises or falls, remaining just outside the top 3, but with a big gap over 5th place. Darren is really at the moment taking centre stage what with his wedding to Nancy and the possibility of hooking back up with Cindy. Darren is one of Hollyoaks’ longest serving characters and its good to still see him remain popular and actually fully used in the show. The relationship between Darren and Jack is also one of the highlights of Hollyoaks – built up over so many years and both characters having been though so much together that its good to see them overcome everything and still be close. Darren and Nancy have become one of Hollyoaks’ most popular characters, again possibly an odd pairing to begin with due to their backgrounds – however they work well together. In the coming weeks we will see how the wedding pans out and what the future holds for Darren and Nancy.

Disappointed that Lynsey didn't make it into the top 5, I thought she would be at least 5th, but I am glad she is so high, the same with Doug. And yes, these two need to get together!!

Lynsey was ok. But I think her stupidity was her downfall. During most of the storyline she was just running around hysterically, to the point where I was almost rooting for Silas a bit.

03 [05] = Mitzeee = 753pts
Mitzeee takes a climb of 2 places and into the top 3 (challenging for 2nd place, only 17 points short. Also to note she was 2nd place in the Round 3 vote). The character was hugely popular since she first debuted on the show and has since gone from strength to strength. Rachel Shenton is fantastic in the role and plays the comedy and drama surrounding the character very well. The character played a big part in the Riley/ Mercedes wedding and also in the Hollyoaks Later Seth plot. Its easy for a charcter like Mitzeee to just be hated as she is very much out for what she can get alot of the time. However the character being teamed up with Warren has brought out her better side. Over Christmas saw her almost being killed at the hands of Warren after crossing him and saw some big drama. It will be good to see where the character goes next and what she will – hopefully she will be given another big storyline soon.

Very pleased with who made the Top 5, I really like them all And so glad Ste managed to stay high despite the writing for his character at the end of last year being pretty poor, so hopefully this will be a good year for him

Loving the top 5 so far all my favourites are in the top ten, although would love to have seen Cindy in the top 10 bit disappointed with that.
