Is Celine Dion the most popular live act?
Years of sell out tours since she began singing 30 years ago, a recent sell out world tour from 08-09, which saw her shift every ticket for 132 shows.
A five year Vegas show for 5 years, which saw every single performance sell out, and again she is repeating that with her new Vegas show which began last March. She often comes in second to Madonna in tour grossing, but with the success of the Vegas shows, could she be more popular as a live act? |

perhaps, but not popular in the same sense as madonna, gaga, shakira etc. she sold out the 2011 and 2012 one, but not all of The New Day one. in terms of grossing they charge a heck of a lot more than most artists do, hence the gross. ie her last one grossed over 400m over 5 years. Its hard to say really. She is popular though...She is big in canada and france, so the fans she has may go to see her in vegas, as well as americans, also the rich will go too.

She is the #1 grossing solo artist in music history, according to ticket sales - well in excess of $1 billion grossed. Only Madonna - who has grossed around $900m - comes anywhere close.
In 1996/1997, her Falling Into You tour grossed over $100m, her Lets Talk About Love tour grossed over $150m. Her first Vegas stint grossed nearly $400m. So far, her new Vegas tour has grossed $48.6m - with a much shorter schedule of only 70 shows per year. Adjusted, this makes it more successful than her original run. Her Taking Chances tour grossed $280m - it would've been the #1 grossing tour by a solo artist in history, had Madonna not chosen to extend her tour. By gross sales alone - she is THE most popular live solo act in contemporary music history. Obviously, some people would like to instead look at ticket sales as a barometer of popularity - she's done fantastic there too, having sold over 10m tickets in her career, ranking her in the top 5 female ticket sellers ever. Some people prefer to incorporate inflation. No matter what your barometer, when it comes to live concerts and tours, Celine Dion and Madonna are THE two top female artists of all-time, just like they are with record sales. |
