Phones4U launches free mobile upgrades every six months

I'm intrigued by this, and may have to change my "Never shop in phones4u" policy.

A new tariff called ‘Just Upgrade My Phone’ means Phones4U customers will be able to trade in their handset every six months, but experts have warned it could prove expensive.

You don't need an expert to tell you there's no such thing as a free lunch!

I know, but I'm willing to pay for a very good lunch, and upgrading every six months like a splendid idea.

Although o2 are generous enough to give me the option of 12 months contracts.

But I know some people who would like to upgrade every 3 months.

It looks like a fairly good deal and from my understanding you choose a sim only contract with whoever you wish (o2, vodafone etc) and then they divide the price of the sim free phone by 18 or 24 months and this gets added onto the sim only amount.

Orange SIM £15.00
iPhone 4S £499

Price of the iPhone divided by 24 months gives 499 / 24 = £21 (rounded up)

Total is £15 + £21 = 36 and plus a small surcharge so will guess it will be £40

The question is after 6 or 12 months when a new phone comes out how much more will the £40 go up by?

My guestimates are...

To upgrade to a new iPhone 5 @ £499 as well after 6 months

Trade in value of iPhone 4S @ £250 (guessing)
Remaining contract 18 months @ £40 gives a grand total of £720
Minus the value of the trade in gives a figure of £470
Add in the iPhone 5 @ 499 which gives £969
So £969 divided over the remaining 18 months give a new tariff of £54

So to upgrade after 6 months will cost you on average an extra £10-15 every 6 months which could result in a very expensive tariff come the end.

Of course if you wait 12 months then it should be cheaper but the handset to trade in will be worth less than it was 6 months ago.

The offset of this is if you can get a better trade in value elsewhere if they give you the difference then that will bring down the overall cost.

Just for a laugh I have calculated what it will cost to upgrade to another £499 phone after another 6 months.

Trade in value of iPhone 5 @ £250 (guessing)
Remaining contract 12 months @ £54 gives a grand total of £648
Minus the value of the trade in gives a figure of £398
Add in the £499 super duper phone @ 499 which gives £897
So £897 divided over the remaining 12 months give a new tariff of £75

Ouch!

Thing is if u just got an iPhone u have no need to upgrade every six months ha

This kind of deal is aimed at android, blackberry & windows mobile types of customers

Very true unless you like to have the best android phone or the best iPhone when they come out.

Either way it can get expensive pretty quick.

It's just playing on the sick and deluded. Anyone taking it up deserves all they get. Good luck!!

Strictly speaking you can only upgrade every 12 months as the cost would get out of control unless you have money to burn and don't mind paying upwards of £100 a month at the end just to get the latest shiny new phone.

Here is a more realistic one for upgrading to a new iPhone every 12 months.

To upgrade to a new iPhone 5 @ £499

Trade in value of iPhone 4S @ £250 (guessing)
Remaining contract 12 months @ £40 gives a grand total of £480
Minus the value of the trade in gives a figure of £230
Add in the iPhone 5 @ 499 which gives £729
So £729 divided over the remaining 12 months give a new tariff of £61 (rounded up)

So to upgrade once in a 2 year contract would cost you an extra £21 a month over the remaining 12 months

Cheaper to just buy the phone sim free in most cases then.

So it's nearly £60 a month and you have to give them your old handset each time.

Sounds like a crap deal to me. That's about what you'll pay £60 per month + giving up your own handset each time, sounds about right.

Plus they are probably factoring in that some people won't upgrade dead on 6 months each time, they might forget for a couple of months or wait for a phone to come out etc.
