Dead of Night

NOT the 1945 British horror anthology film, but a 1974 US horror, which was also known as "Deathdream".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068457/

This is a really good old school horror, about a Vietnam soldier coming home ... but there's something "different" about him ...
Directed by Bob Clark (who went on to do the brilliant "Murder by Decree" and "Porkys"!), this is good solid creepy stuff. Richard Backus who plays "Andy" is perfect and really gets under your skin ... literally...

Incidentally, I saw this on DVD double bill (one disc package), with "Children shouldn't play with dead things", and it made the perfect late-night treat...

I Am Sam- 4/10 - Sentimental mush that completely suspends reality.. Found Sean Penn playing at being mentally handicapped to be v. uncomfortable viewing.. The only saving grace was how impressive Dakota Fanning's performance was (probably 7 or 8 years old in this?).. Michelle Pfeiffer, as usual, turned in a v.solid performance..

Sorry, meant to say Moonrise Kingdom.

Lovely bones. Don't know why, but only managed to watch half of it.

"Journey 2 the Mysterious Island".
Great if you're eight . . . or Michael Caine's agent. If you're a Jules Verne fan, not so much.

I know what I saw-

documentary about ufo's. some interesting stories but also some bull**** which kind of ruined it. starting to wonder if it was basically public disinformation.

"Shock Waves" 1976.
Clueless tourists trapped on the world's least attractive tropical island with Peter Cushing a platoon of Nazi zombies. Better than it sounds.

Last Action Hero

Arnie famously came unstuck in this smug Hollywood/fantasy/action deconstruction that, like many others trying the same trick, ends up relying on the sort of conventions they think they're undermining for any sort of dramatic impact. It's as if once they've taken the film apart, all they can do is put it back together again, and rather hastily too. Still, fairly diverting and very well-handled at times, but still rather needless overall. 6/10

Surrogates

Bruce Willis SF-actioner crippled by a jumpy narrative and horribly over-slick editing that makes the whole film feel like one long trailer for itself. Shame, as the potential was there. Once again Hollywood gets hold of a solid SF concept ripe for decent treatment and acts like it hasn't. And when will Rosamund Pike (swoon) get the breaks? 5.5/10

Avengers 3d - 8/10. Excellent fun. Tony Stark is still the best character of them all though. Although the big green angry fella had a few priceless moments. "PUNY GOD".

3d - 4/10 A few wow moments but mainly it was a bit pointless and quite often pretty blurry in the front of vision. Probably my first and last 3d experience.
