I completely disagree.

If a film isn't good enough to grab me in the first 10 or so minutes - never mind half way through - I'm certainly not going to waste another 60-120 minutes to find out that I was right all along. I've very rarely liked a film that I thought was crud in the first 15 minutes, when I have managed to watch it through to the end. There are far too many good films to watch, there's no need to try to make yourself like something that's badly made or simply rubbish.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo(original) - 8.5/10 - I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had absolutely no idea of the plot beyond the two of them investigating a murder. Wasn't expecting the brutal, although not too graphic, rape and torture themes. What an interesting character Lisbet was.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) James Stewart - 7.5/10 - a cracking court room drama for a wet Saturday afternoon. For a 1959 James Stewart movie it was surprisingly gritty content. Although at the end I couldn't quite work out if the defendant and his wife had pulled a fast one or not to get him off or whether James Stewart's lawyer character cared one way or the other.

Just seen Avatar extended edition for the first time it was a great film at least an 8 out of 10 from me or more.
I just watched the HD version but it was stunning on the LG 50 inch Plasma.

Ghostbusters 7/10
SFX may look dated but it's still a fantastic film

Watched Bridesmaids -entertaining enough but I didn't find it as funny as the hype led me to believe (6/10).

Also watched Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer - visually stunning, great characters and really enjoyed it (9/10)

I sort of agree. After all, the opening of a film is pretty important in creating a sense of what it's about, and you can usually tell within the first few minutes whether the director is really in charge and has an overall control that will make the film into something you'll enjoy.

It's a bit different though when it comes to films with a good reputation. It's sometimes worth hanging in there and finding a film surprises you.

The write up on the epg described it as "distubring" when I hopped onto the start of it last night.

I was inclined to agree when I saw the blood soaked baby lying amongst the fish guts, maggots and rats.

The Madness Of King George

First time I've seen this and I enjoyed it up to a point. I hoped it would stick a little more to historical facts, so that was slightly disappointing, and the normally reliable Ian Holm was hammier than a pork pie factory, which dampened the experience slightly.

6/10

I only caught the last 20 minutes or so of Perfume : The Story Of A Murderer, but I found it to be visually stunning and mesmerising, although somewhat disturbing - it stayed in my mind for ages after.

It reminded me very much of something that Ken Russell or Peter Greenaway might create.

For at least the part that I saw 8/10

Girl with a Dragon Tattoo was too brutal for me, although I was gripped at the violent scenes, I had to step away from the film!

Frida 7/10
Based on the life of Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. I saw a joint exhibition of their work last year so was eager to see the film. Salma Hayek was amazing in it, she's a much under rated actress, it's a sad story, but visually stunning. So vibrant.

The Amityville Haunting

A mixture of "The Amityville Horror", "Paranormal Activity" ... and a pile of horse manure.

Another awful "found footage" film, with some incredibly bad acting. The house doesn't even look like the iconic Amityville house ...

1/10 ... and that mark is only due to ONE good bit.
There's a conversation between two characters, that's interrupted by hisses and scratches (more "found footage" cliches), and a subliminal scene flashes up for one frame only. When I paused it on the DVD, it's actually the final shot of the film, which only makes sense in context.
Nice trick. Wasted on this film though ...

The Long Ships

Wonderful Richard Newmark & Sidney Poitier film about Vikings & the Moors begrudgingly joining forces to find a huge bell made of gold. Shades of the old Sinbad/Jason movies here, a great old fashioned yarn full of swashbuckling adventure. Enormous fun

8/10

Klute

Highly regarded noir-ish thriller from the deep, dark seventies. Rather dated but still weirdly hypnotic in the way films from this period sometimes are. The plot is no great shakes and it ambles along a little too leisurely at times. But the mood can't be faulted and the perfomances are stunning: a nicely dialed-back turn from Donald Sutherland and Roy Schneider makes a terrific slime-ball. Yet both bow down to Jane Fonda's vulnerable, philosophical hooker - a fully-deserved Oscar winner, and then some. 8/10

Prometheus
