Sisters

Very early and very lurid psycho-thriller from Brian De Palma, the sort of arch Hitchcock pastiche he does so well. Starts off mad enough, then goes completely off the rails. The ending is a bit abrupt, but a lot of it is brilliant - the dream sequences alone are worth the ticket. This is the film that told us De Palma had arrived, and it's not hard picturing the old goat sniggering away behind the camera. 9/10

State of Play

Briskly efficient political/newsroom thriller, based on the TV show. Nothing truly spectacular but a good enough tale with a few sharp turns from its impressive cast. Crowe reminds you just why he's an A-lister here. 7/10

A Dangerous Method.

1/10. I couldn't get past Keira Knightley's truly atrocious overacting. I don't think the film was any good any way, but she was so distracting, I honestly don't know.

Phone Booth
Stone me! Why have I not seen this film before now?! It’s SO short and simple yet SO good it’s unreal! I draw comparisons to a plot-point in Die Hard: With a Vengeance (the calls to the phone boxes) but that aside I love the plot and think it’s a nice take on that style of narrative. It’s also refreshing to see a baddie that isn’t out for money or revenge but something completely different. The main cast is also pretty strong with Colin Farrell, Denzil Washington and Keither Sutherland. Considering the whole thing is set in pretty much one location they make the most of it and Sutherland’s voice is chuffing creepy and is perfect for such a role. The film is short but it is pretty satisfying and the supporting actresses and actors are pretty good throughout. It’s also nice to see a film that is character driven and doesn’t rely on special effects (at least not that much). The only annoying thing was when the prostitutes were on screen. They may be good at screaming and shouting when they go about their job but seriously in the film it was more irritating than a bad rash. 8/10

Dial ‘M’ For Murder
Ye ol’ Hitchcock film. Not his best work by any means and it comes across as like a very old episode of a detective drama at times and the effects and backdrops are from the company ‘Low-Budget-Effects-Ltd’ but it’s still pretty good overall. As usual Hitchcock has many of his usual themes running through his film – murder, affairs, relationships between men and women, death etc – which stick to his usual trend of things and this is no different. There’s the usual Hitchcock twists and turns but the resolution is a bit of a letdown and the ending is abrupt and laughable! The acting isn’t the best seen in a Hitchcock film either, although the scene of the attack on Grace Kelly’s (Hmmm…. Grace Kelly…. ) character is also rather brutal for a Hitchcock piece. For some reason the detective also reminded me of Frank Morgan from BBC’s ‘Life On Mars’ 5.5/10

A Clockwork Orange
I’m trying to work out who was the one on drugs, me watching the film or the writers, creators and directors when they made it – chuffing weird film. Crazy as f*ck! Should have seen the looks the housemates and I gave each other as the credits rolled lmao. Apparently the book is just as weird! There’s some interesting subject matter and views in there and the way it is shot in places is pretty good but overall it’s just downright weird and not very well acted imo. I do like what it says about society and politics and things like that though, but overall pretty hit and miss for tbh. 5/10

The Thing (1982)
It’s not the best film of its kind out there and there are several comparisons one can make to other films of the same genre, but that being said the film is still very good and I don’t know why it was panned by critics . The acting is sufficient and Kurt is easily one of the stars. The character driven strands (paranoia, isolation etc) are done very well and I love the bleak setting (the way most of it is shot at night against the snow (black on white) and then of course the fire on top of that make it visually pleasing! I also loved the downbeat and slightly abrupt ending, I think it worked well. 6/10

Little Miss Sunshine
Seemed pretty low-budget, but I loved it non-the-less! Was plenty funny (even when it perhaps shouldn’t have been…) and the characters and most of the situations seemed real imo. There’s some recognisable faces in there and although the acting isn’t fantastic I have to say I do think this was Steve Carrel’s best acting roll imo. I loved the way the film picks up on what is wrong with society these days too – dysfunctional families, beauty and looks being everything, suicide and so on... I think it all comes together very well in the film. There were a couple of moments where I cringed or was like “Erm, wtf….??!!” but that aside I think it is a very good little film. 8.5/10

I'm not a big fan of the original but this makes it look like an epic.
I totally love the original and was looking forward to the remake as I knew the special effect they could use would be so much better. I like it, I will watch it again, doesn't have the same pathos as the original though.

I truly like this film, have watched it half a dozen times and will watch it again and again. Of course the critics panned it, it is just spiteful Arnie bashing for the sake of it.

Tangled
Pinocchio
Lady And The Tramp

Yes, I've got a 4 year old! I quite liked Tangled to be fair, but despite their classic status I found the other two quite boring to be honest.

Michael Collins (1996)
....Michael Collins plays a crucial role in the establishment of the Irish Free State in the 1920s, but becomes vilified by those hoping to create a completely independent Irish republic. With Liam Neeson, Aidan Quinn and Julia Roberts

Excellent film 8/10, some small historical errors but all in all a good history lesson.

Hawking (2004) - BBC
...The story of the search for the beginning of time, dramatisation of physicist Stephen Hawking's early career while at the University of Cambridge.

10/10 Benedict Cumberbatch is spot on, fantastic film.

United (2011) - BBC

...The true story of Manchester United's famous 'Busby Babes' and the 1958 plane crash in Munich that claimed eight of their lives is recreated in new BBC film United.

10/10 As a United fan this is beyond good, David Tennant is excellent.

I watched American Psycho last night and thought Bale was incredible in it, although, I didn't understand the catharsis bit at the end.

I just watched The Social Network, it is an interesting story if not a little depressing, I believe that some of the characters have been misrepresented and I really hope that is true

The film itself was well acted and had a decent story to it, I especially liked Andrew Garfield - he is a relative unknown to me personally, but I think he is a pretty damn good actor and deserves all the praise he is bound to be getting, I really wish I had the talent of some of these people

Film I would give 8.2 out of 11
