I am a massive classical music fan

I like all the great works and composers

But without any hesitation repetition or deviation I proudly say my favourite bit of classical piano music is Chopin,s Minute Waltz which of course is the theme to Just A Minute that brilliant Radio 4 panel game

Being a classical musician myself I don't think I could choose a number one favourite as there's so much to choose from! Also it changes depending on the times etc but at the moment I would say Beethoven 7th Symphony, Mahler Ruckert Lieder, Schubert Death and the Maiden Quartet and Janacek Taras Bulba. I am a big opera fan too and am listening to Lulu by Berg a lot at the moment

I absolutely love Night On Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky or Night on BALD mountain as it's sometimes called. I'm not sure if there's a difference. If anyone knows maybe you can tell me.
Also love
Ride of the valkyries by Wagner
Montagues and Capulets by Prokofiev
Moonlight Sonata

I'm afraid Im a bit of a philistine when it comes to classical music but I'd also go with Prokofiev's Montagues and Capulets.

The other one that springs to mind is Jupiter by Holst-which became the basis for the hymn I Vow To Thee My Country.

If i remember 1812 & Prokofiev's Montagues and Capulets were fav's

four seasons (spring) is another. I seem to favour the violin over the piano ?

Mahlers 8th symphony..........but I always skip the singy bit at the beginning and go straight to CD2.........

The final part of Mahler's Das leid von der Erde

Beethoven - Piano concertos numbers 1 and 4, Violin concerto, Symphonies 7 and 9

Leave it at that - you can't go wrong with Beethoven and Mahler

That organ chord at the beginning with the choir coming in is fab, though.

I think the finale of Mahler's 8th is the most perfect piece of classical music

I'm not keen on the beginning of the symphony with those songs..........fortunately I've got it on a 2 CD set and the songs are all on the first CD with the proper music on the 2nd one........

It's the same with Das Leid von der Erde........I always skip the first few short songs and go straight to the final tone poem which is just amazing - it lasts 30 minutes so it's practically a symphony..........I'm listening to it now on Youtube.......

I prefer Mahler's 9th but also generally skip to CD 2 of that one.

I also concur with Beethoven's violin concerto, the 1st piece that really got me into classical music. Surprised no one's mentioned Mozart yet.

Fair point actually about Mozart, probably go for Symphony No 25.

Just a few non opera pieces...

Mozart - Flute & Harp Concerto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRVzdwDgegQ

Mozart - Clarinet Concerto in A Major http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLtCPLIMYtc

Mozart - Piano Concerto 21http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df-eLzao63I

OK there's a theme here

If I'm including opera I would include the relatively obscure Martha - Friedrich von Flotow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP2Oq...eature=related

Along with a couple of fairly obvious choices for lovers of Italian opera; Verdi - La Traviata and Puccini - La bohème

Difficult to pick one, but Bach seems to have got more and more important to me as I've got older - the Cantatas and the St Matthew Passion especially - along with Schubert's later works.
