Dido
Dido. Why is she so popular? Why does she sell so many albums? What am I missing here?
I bought her album. I played it all the way through. Once. I don't 'get her'. Am I odd?

Dido is popular music for Guardian readers. People who've grown out of pop music but never had the imagination to listen to any other type of music like rock / indie / hip-hop or whatever.
People who buy her albums are the sort who say things like "oh, I don't really listen to music" and whose entire CD collection consists of Dido, Phil Collins' Greatest Hits, "Carry On Up the Charts" by the Beautiful South and a compilation album of love songs. And a "Now That's What I Call Music" album that had that song from an advert that they liked. I'm going to get shot down in flames now... |

I don't read the Guardian, like most types of music but particularly rock & blues and don't own any Phil Collins or "Now That's What I Call Music" cds. And yet I liked Dido's first album. How does that work then? |

No easy answer. well, actually there is
![]() Some people like stuff others dont . No point in trying to understand why , because if YOU dont get it or like it, then all you can do is make 'excuses' for people with different tatses, based on your own tastes. which doesnt work, because others have different preferences. Its like trying to understand why some people like yellow and others prefer blue. |

As for "growing out of pop music" - I've never been into it...oh I'm 42 by the way. I don't get why such vitriol is cast in the direction of Dido...if you don't like then fine, no body forces you to, but to actually completely slate somebodies taste in music just because they like an artist who is talented with an incredible voice is amazing! Now maybe I might start another thread on why on earth people like Oasis! |

I read the Guardian, I like Dido, and I listen to other types of music - and I'm only 25
![]() Although I heard a Gabriel & Dresden remix of 'Don't Leave Home' recently, which was amazing. |

Dido's bland mass-market fare (this is not a negative comment, it's easy to prove) and as such behaves like McDonald's - they sell loads but we all know it's not the best.
Target me now, o Didodefenders

im 16, read the daily mirror, and have the streets, eminems, limp biskit, and other types of music such as my indie favourite was catatonia, and i have bought dido's music(few singles,an albumn) its very relaxing and peaceful music. and i like the acoustic backgrounds to most of her songs.
its all down to personal taste. |

Speaking personally, I like Dido because she's beautiful, writes her own songs, can actually sing, has establised herself as artist in her own right on both sides of the pond (albeit over there first), worked her ass off to get where she is, isn't a reality TV celeb, doesn't fit into a currently trendy genre and 'made' Eminem's best track. I'd probably like any artist that fitted that criteria. Beats the hell out of me why the likes of Gerbils Aloud, McFly, Rachel Stevens are so popular but I can see why they appeal to some, in the same way I can see why some people would hate Dido.
Incidentally, best anti-Dido quote I've seen. Music to eat lasagne for one to. |

Because I have well over 700 CD's (all albums and not singles) plus about the same vinyl albums. My range includes indie, metal, rock, some dance, classical and also errr Dido! |

Is it not just that she is popular because she actually sells records in BIG numbers.
I know that sounds silly but bear with me a second whilst i try to get this right... Dido appeals to the mass market who like conventional "songs and tunes" she makes everyone happy..... The music suits as she sells records, retailers ditto, radio stations as she is safe to play, and possibly best of all in the marketiting peoples eyes... she is a beautiful women with a modicum of musical talent. Nothing wrong or right in all that. it's just the way it is |

My gripe with Dido is that her music has no edge, no emotion, no passion or any energy.
She has a voice which I wouldn't even put on par with Posh Spice! She just sings in a breathy whisper and barely has any power or range. But its distinctive and goes with her music I suppose is what really counts in the end. And the fact that Life for Rent seems like No Angel rehashed smacks of pure laziness |
