Toshiba TV
Hi, my Toshiba 24 inch Widescreen TV (model 24Z33B I think) makes a low humming noise on some of the channels on my Pace DTVA Freeview digibox (connected via SCART). It's much worst on the Sky Sports News channel but is also there on other channels, though usually more quietly.
When I press the MENU button or LIST button on the remote for the Freeview box while viewing Sky Sports News, the humming pratically stops! Pressing these buttons brings up a blue (like the Digital Spy website, slightly lighter) box in the middle, covering a lot of the picture. Also, when Sky Sports News goes for ads, the humming seems to disappear. Sometimes it comes and goes during scene changes in a programme or ad. Lowering the CONTRAST levels on the TV lowers the hum slightly. No problems with the analogue signal/channels. I had this problem with my Ferguson 14 inch TV but it was much less noticeable and a less annoying. It doesn't appear to happen on the Sony 24 inch TV in the living room. The humming seems to come from the screen and pretty much seems the humming's got something to do with the picture on screen. A frequency some TV's don't like via SCART? Anyone know why this happens, if I should try another brand, etc? Any input very much appreciated. Thanks. Last edited by Seven : 28-10-2004 at 01:07. |

I have the 28Z33B (28 inh version) and have no problems with it. is there anything near the tv that might cause interference, is the dtva on top of the tv? or speakers near it?

If you've got Freeview or Sky connected via SCART, put it on the Sky Sports news channel and press mute. When scene changes occur the humming stops (then starts when scene changes back), and when this channel goes to ads it stops. Some channes and ads have this 'scence' prob. I can't understand why it doesn't happen on the Sony TV in the living room. Maybe cos it's Wega Triniton? If I change my TV (hassle), the new one could have the same prob even if it's a different brand. I've been looking for a 24 inch Sony widescreen TV but they're expensive/hard to find. |

This sounds like interference from the video signal to the audo on the scart. Have you tried a higher quality scart lead?

what bobcar just said sounds like it is the problem as you experienced it on your previous tv. It sounds like interference, posibly from the dtva as it has that weird scart adapter with the mains, rf and power going through the same scart lead. it could be causing interefence.

What you're both saying makes sense but it doesn't explain why it happens only on some 'scenes' and not others, and why it doesn't happen on the Sony. Bobcar, as Asdigi said, the Pace DTVA has a weird SCART connector, you can't change it. The sound is DEFINITELY coming from or directly behind the screen. It's a strange vibration. If I slide my hand across the screen I can feel a small vibration (not when my hand is stationary, only when sliding across). When I can't hear the humming (mostly on BBC channels), and I try sliding my hand across the screen, I can't feel that vibration.
Any suggestions guys? (NOTE: Thanks a lot for the input already) |

this might sound daft, but mute the sound and listen to the left hand speaker. If it sounds like a vibration it could possibly be the aquadag (metal braid going around the tube) vibrating on a sticky label stuck on the side of the tube, you'll have to take the back off though.

Tried that. Humming is definitely coming from behind the screen or from the screen itself. It's present mainly on channels with graphics, such as Sky Sports News and shopping channels like QVC.
Like I said before the humming is sometimes present on other channels, which stops during some 'scenes'. It's louder than my last TV's humming (14inch screen size). I think maybe the humming is louder because it's a bigger screen. Maybe the 'odd' SCART connection is causing the humming, but the larger screen size seems to be amplifying the humming/vibration. I'm still unsure of why the Sony doesn't do this yet my current TV and my last TV make/made this humming sound. It's almost a buzzing sound. Also, why does the humming get quieter when I lower the contrast setting? I get a bad picture with low contrast so I have to keep it higher. It's not present on the analogue channels even if the DTVA is turned on, so I'm inclined to think it isn't interference. Last edited by Seven : 02-11-2004 at 00:32. |

what about pluging the dtva into a vcr, put the vcr on the appropriate av channel and then tune the vcr into the tv via rf connection so there is nothing connected to the tv's scart sockets, you should then be able to use the freeview through the vcr.
If it doesnt make the buzzing sound then there must be something in the dtva's scart plug that is causing interference when connected directly to the tv (maybe interference from something in the plug being to close to the tv's components, poor sheilding maybe). if that works then you could get a 2 way scart adapter which has a short lead to simply connect between the dtva and tv so its not directly connected the tv but will function the same. Hope that makes sense

The same problem occurs. I recorded it using the same method and got the same probs on playback so I don;t think it's interference.
It's being exchanged on Friday for another problem (screen gone slightly bent, no menu options to correct it). I'm hoping the humming/buzzing will not be present on the new one. I'll let you guys know. Thanks again for the input and thanks to asdigi for that suggestion. Even though I couldn't solve the prob, it has helped me understand it better. |
