The end slices of a loaf of bread
Do you actually use them? I always chuck them away. I deem them not suitable for sandwiches but...are they?

Perfectly OK, although sometimes a bit thick (Warburtons seeded batch, I mean you). Great for toast especially with cheese as it doesn't go right through, and sarnies are fine. Also good for dunking in soup.
Why waste it? |

I love the crusts, I use them for sandwiches, toast, or just as a slice of bread with some spread on it.

Heel? I didn't know it was called that!
I have just done an experiment. I only had the heels of Warburton toasty small sliced bread. I grilled the crusty side, then turned it over and added baked beans, cheese, dried herbs, then back under the grill.
It was great! I think it was actually better using the heel rather than the non-heel! All these years I actually thought the heels were just there to keep the rest of the bread slices soft, I thought everyone threw them away! |

Mmm, the best bit for toasting
Nice and thick and chewy. When I lived at home my stepmum also liked them and i'd regularly find the other end of the bag had been opened and she'd pinched the other end! |

Kingsmill - really ? I don't like this bread - it feels ' damp ' to me and sticks to the roof of your mouth.

Somehow the queen doesn't come accross as being wasteful, so I find this hard to believe.
cucumber sandwiches never have their crusts on!... that would be too common for words, don't you know!........

Nah. It's bird food in our house. I don't even eat the crusts. I always find the 'heel' rather leathery.

![]() You have obviously never eaten in 'polite' society La!...... cucumber sandwiches never have their crusts on!... that would be too common for words, don't you know!........ ![]() What I don't believe is that only the 4 MIDDLE slices of the bread get used for cucumber sandwiches. |
