Do you actually use them? I always chuck them away. I deem them not suitable for sandwiches but...are they?

Perfectly OK, although sometimes a bit thick (Warburtons seeded batch, I mean you). Great for toast especially with cheese as it doesn't go right through, and sarnies are fine. Also good for dunking in soup.

Why waste it?

I love the crusts, I use them for sandwiches, toast, or just as a slice of bread with some spread on it.

You can beat a heel for toast with a big mug of tea!

I have just done an experiment. I only had the heels of Warburton toasty small sliced bread. I grilled the crusty side, then turned it over and added baked beans, cheese, dried herbs, then back under the grill.

It was great! I think it was actually better using the heel rather than the non-heel!

All these years I actually thought the heels were just there to keep the rest of the bread slices soft, I thought everyone threw them away!

Mmm, the best bit for toasting Nice and thick and chewy.

When I lived at home my stepmum also liked them and i'd regularly find the other end of the bag had been opened and she'd pinched the other end!

That's what I do but minus the butter. Can't stand the stuff.

the queen would not eat the crusts. at the palace, they buy a big loaf of kingsmill, and cut 2" squares from the centre 4 slices to make their cucumber sandwiches

Kingsmill - really ? I don't like this bread - it feels ' damp ' to me and sticks to the roof of your mouth.

Kingsmill smells iffy. Has to be Braces for me, if they haven't got any - Hovis.

Somehow the queen doesn't come accross as being wasteful, so I find this hard to believe.

All white bread is like that to me!..... it's all 'nuck na nair nair' as my mum used to say!......

You have obviously never eaten in 'polite' society La!......
cucumber sandwiches never have their crusts on!... that would be too common for words, don't you know!........

Nah. It's bird food in our house. I don't even eat the crusts. I always find the 'heel' rather leathery.

Polite or posh or snobbish ? Because, trust me, the people I eat with are always polite.
What I don't believe is that only the 4 MIDDLE slices of the bread get used for cucumber sandwiches.

Four 2" diameter cut-outs per slice.
