To my mind the way this sentence is constructed would suggest that the squares are cut out from the 4 slices in the centre (middle) of the loaf.

Defo use the crusts, no need to be wasteful!!

They make OK sandwiches but are usually too dry so they are best used for toast, soups or dried for breadcrumbs.

Not a fan of the ootsiders, I give them a whizz in the food processer and freeze as breadcrumbs.

I like them with peanut butter on. I've never heard of them being called a heel before, we'd call it/them the crust.

I use them for fried bread. Run the bread under cold water as per normal and pop in the frying pan. The water makes the crust soft of course, then it crisps up in the hot fat. Yummy.

yeah, I know. I dislike Kingsmill as well.

I expect HMQ has a nice £3 a loaf artisan bread. But I am pretty sure they cut the crusts off.

They are my favourite bits! I love them if they are soft, just with butter, or toast them if a bit hard. My dad used to give me a row for taking the top and bottom, buy putting my hand down the side and slowly working it up to the top of the bag, he used to say I "messed up" the loaf - it didn't!, but it show the length I'd go to for a crust!

I actually love the doorstop size ends, and Kingsmill too, Hovis, really soft bread, I always feel kinda disappointed when it's just a wee yen!

I use em for toast and breadcrumbs. I think they make the nicest toast. But yes, not ideal for sandwiches.

My husband always uses them. If i do a fry up (or grill up) he likes them to mop up the tomato juices. Its quite annoying sometimes as the rest of the loaf can dry out !!

I dont like them, and if i can wrestle them off my husband, the fish get them.

I always have to disagree with this, the Crusts of the loaf is ideal for making a kind of mini stuffed loaf sandwich, because the bread gives the same slightly chewy texture. And these are lovely sandwiches.

Example of real stuffed loaf sandwich.

Oh, you're quite right. I'd forgotten about those. I use the ends if I make a toastie.

But regular run of the mill sandwiches, i think middle is best.

I never eat them, I always just eat the slices, but I have no idea why?!
Maybe I'm crust-ist! I have a loaf at home, so I'll make a point of trying the crusts, see what I think!

The crust/heel on the Warburton's 'thickest' loaf is pretty epic.

Smothered with Clover and Strawberry jam and alongside a glass of milk it's a perfect supper.

Yes, that and the strawberry jam, which would match perfectly with the red bendy straw....


No reflection on you, or the poster, it just caught an image I have in my mind...Maybe triggered a memory? - Especially if the sarnies are cut into triangles.....
