She's just won the critic award normally when someone wins that award there not nominated for best breakthrough until next year for example Jessie J Adele and Florence were all nominated for best breakthrough the year after they won the critic award . Wonder why Emeli is nominated already

Called 'counting the chicken's before they have hatched' - as far as industry insiders go.The fact she was nominated shows how much fixing goes on within the industry. They possibly have got egg on their faces in this case though.
She hasn't broken through yet - in 'industry' terms anyway.
Haven't listened to her other stuff yet (apart from her supposedly break through single).Have read some not so complimentary write-ups about her album.Has she been over 'homogenised' by her record label producers. It would be sad if she has as she has talent.

I do would of prefered someone who did already breakthrough and hadn't had the chance to already win a Critics choice award was nominated. Katy B would of been nice or even Rebecca Ferguson.

Emeli has been in the charts since 2009. I think her first top 10 hit was Diamond Rings. She's been well known by some of the general public for years already.

It actually would of been better for her to be nominated next year as she probably would of had a better chance of winning she don't stand a chance of winning now

I agree with this. It seems that people in the industry are desperate to produce 'an Adele' for 2012 - forgetting the fact that it was pretty much Adele's music alone that made her so successful over the past 12 months (I'm not normally one to bring other artists into a debate but I feel in this case it is justified).

They should allow Emeli to do the same rather than contriving a 'success story' for her, as you say she is talented so should be allowed to forge her career and industry respect on her own merits.

Just listened to the album on Spotify. If it was me I'd say she needs to go back to the drawing board - I would have said the same as the majority of Adele's album as well though. The songs are mostly slow tempo. It's virtually easy listening.Easy listening seems to be coming back into fashion it seems - (slow tempo) adult contemporary has always featured on R&B artists albums - a close cousin of easy listening, but with the minimal strings & piano backing this definately goes back to easy listening that was last popular in the mid '70's.Don't mind some slow tempo songs personally (quite like alot of Air's stuff - downtempo / Trip-hop).Was expecting something a little more creative (musically) on this album. It will probably still sell well. This is not a very good album though (imo) - only 2 or 3 songs stand out to any extent really.Although the vocal talent is obvious.

Have heard she is supposed to do some Trip-hop songs - where are they on this album

I just listened to it on Spotify too and I have pretty much the same opinion. I might download a couple of the individual songs but I'm not going to be buying the whole album.

It's a shame because I think she has the potential to make a really good album but 'Our Version Of Events' isn't it.

She had a number 1 hit with Professor Green.

That's certainly a way to breakthrough successfully and deserves recognition.

Maybe & she seems to be well respected by alot of people. But you cannot get away from the fact that this is (mainly) bad & un-focused album. At the point she was nominated, she hadn't broken through commercially, as such (in 'Industry' speak).Although she seems to be breaking through, possibly, now (has this something to do with the fact that she was nominated for this reward in the first place).

Is she getting these rewards before she comes up with the goods OR is the talent being squeezed out of her in the pursuit of commercial compromises - talent alone doesn't guarantee good music.

Jessie J do it like a dude was quite a big hit when she was nominated and Price tag went to No1 before the brits I believe yet she's been nominated for breakthrough this year so that don't matter

As a fan I'm annoyed at this aswell. It's a public voted award where she'll be up against Jessie J and Ed Sheeran. She's got no chance.

I don't get why she's nominated this year either. She shouldn't be.

Sian Evans did guest vocals with DJ Fresh's No.1 . Did this make her a breakthrough or gain her more recognition for her band Kosheen - who by the way have done some exellent stuff (two Gold albums - moderate success) - No it didn't.

When Emeli Sande did that quest song with Professor Green she was vertially still an unknown, as Sian Evans still continues to be.Sian Evans is too old of course to be the 'bright new thing' for the Industry to exploit .

PS Only used above as an example - could have picked out loads of others through the years.
PPS Repeat - I think Eneli Sande has talent - is she getting too much credit - too early without, really, coming up with the goods.Which won't help to bring out her POTENTIAL.

i agree it definitely would have been better to see someone like Katy B or Wretch 32 nominated for Breakthrough as they both had brilliant years yet snubbed by the Brits. I love Emeli Sande, but her debut album has only just come out and i think she thoroughly deserved the Critic's Choice Award, but it wouldn't be right if she won Breakthrough act as well. Ed Sheeran all the way!

The Brits is a joke altogether as far as I'm concerned. With music tastes so fragmented these days they only serve as another marketing technique to get the chosen ones more exposure - in most? / many cases undeservably.

Isn't chart success enough - these awards only replocate who has / is / or will do well in the charts (or a small selection chosen by a committee of Industry insiders).Only three of the awards are actually chosen by a the public & not fully inclusive really.

British Single Award

The British Single Award, as voted for by listeners of Capital FM and users of iTunes.
There are 10 nominee singles. Voting will begin at 19.30 hours on 12 January 2012 and close at 12:00 hours on 17 February 2012.

British Breakthrough Award

The British Breakthrough Award is supported by listeners of BBC Radio 1 across the UK.
There are 5 nominee acts. Voting will begin at 12 January 2012 and close at 12:00 hours on 17 February 2012.

British Group

The British Group Awards is supported by listeners of BBC Radio 2 across the UK.
There are 5 nominee acts. Voting will begin at 19.30 hours on 12 January 2012 and close at 12:00 hours on 17 February 2012.

Note - Groups chosen from Radio 2 listeners ?
Why exactly
Why do Capital FM listeners get such a big say on the choice of best single (not that I'm that interested in singles personally) Why so London centric - itunes fair enough (athough Amazon & a few other download services, perhaps, could also be used to increase impartiality)

Fuming that Katy B has been snubbed by the Brits!!!

I also find it odd tbh. I don't feel she's entitled to the Critics Choice Award as she's already had two top 20 singles and featured on a #1!

I dont think featuring on a record classes as a debut. I think they base it on your own material. I'd heard her name bandied about but nothing much else than that. I think she does deserve it though, she's been undercover writing for ages too, and for many artists, same for Jessie J. and Heaven came out in august, so she's more than allowed to be nominated. And it came in at number 2 which is very high for a more or less unknown.

Most categories at the Brits require a full album of new or virtually all new material (ie not a Greatest Hits) to have been released in the previous year, but the breakthrough/newcomer category seems to be possible on singles success alone (and Heaven would have been a worthy best single nomination). This "rule" allowed, iirc, Lisa Loeb to win best international newcomer in the mid 90's on the basis of one single, "Stay (I Missed You)" and never had another hit, the only one-hit wonder Brits winner ever I wonder.

I really like Emeli and all the singles so far, but got an awful feeling the album is going to be a bit of a disappointment.
