There have been a few instances lately both on and off these forums that have shown me just how rife this is getting and when I think back it's actually something that has always been around.

I remember being a kid and if you were seen carrying a Netto bag as you'd shopped there then the entire school would be calling you a scratter.

The same thing is happens at work now, the people who bring home made sandwiches and salads look down on the folk who eat canteen meals, both of these look down on folk who bring microwave meals.

Even on here we have multiple threads where people are actually berating others for eating takeaways and shopping at value retailers.

I mean what is the world coming to when we have to get that worked up and hot headed over what other people eat. I don't actually see what having an opinion on the food that other people eat gains you? do you feel some sort of prestige over others as your food cost more to make? or is that you feel you have the skill of cooking which makes you superior to those that don't?

IMO there no need to concern yourself with what others eat, be happy with what you eat, let others be happy with what they eat and forget stupid arguments about who's eating habits are more acceptable.

.....rant...done!!

I agree. Even tho i dont shop at a certain frozen food shop i feel the need to stck up for people who do. How dare someone make assumptions of someones parenting, income, laziness levels over where they shop!!!

Lol yeah I saw that thread too, but I feel it's more then just that thread. that type of opinion is getting more and more widespread and it's a really unwelcome attitude.

Food is food, in a world where a third of it is struggling to eat who are we to tell those that are fortunate enough to be eating(no matter how cheap the food) how they should be doing it!

Completely agree personally I cook from scratch but if anyone wants to eat ready meals well that's for them not my business at all. I have been in the position of having plenty of money for shopping and times of very little money I adjust my shops and shopping accordingly, I have met some lovely people in both waitrose and iceland. People doing their best for their families and in both places I have seen people buy food to cook from scratch and plenty of ready meals. M&S patrons thrive on really expensive ready meals !

As long as you enjoy it, I wouldn't but that's because I am vegetarian not because I look down on people eating it

The problem with everything in this world, there is always someone out there to look down or be scornful. This can be anything from clothes, where you live, what you read, even what you watch on TV. So as long as there are people around I can't imagine snobbery not being around.

I try my best in life to live and let live. I try not to judge people for whatever (music/food/films) I don't know if I always succeed because I am sure the least judgemental of us have done it once in awhile.

I would love to eat only the best food products but I can't always afford it, but I also love some food that others (on these forums) have called slop, disgusting, evil, etc. So who am I to judge others who like KFC, just because I don't.

Oh absolutely OP! See any thread about McDonalds for instance and witness the stampede of people rushing over to tell everyone how they'd rather eat excrement than one morsel of fast food.

There's a 'how often do you eat takeaways' thread where you can feel the smugness of the people declaring that they have one twice a year if ever.

I contributed to a thread about Findus Crispy Pancakes and even then someone had to come in and say they were crap food.

Somehow it's considered okay to declare a food 'tastes shit' if it's 'unhealthy' but not if it's a healthy food but you just don't like it.

Oddly, though, the 'what's for dinner tonight?' thread is always full of people saying 'lasagne, chips & garlic bread' or 'Chinese takeaway tonight' and the 'what are you eating at the moment thread' is full of 'kitkat', 'jam sandwich', 'sausage roll' etc, so clearly lots of people are enjoying their crap!

WHAT!!! someone doesn't like crispy pancakes?? they need shooting!!

I can honestly say that i will never look down upon what anyone eats. I may have my other bad traits but unless someone is actually feeding horse crap to their kids then it's non of my business.

I'd think horse crap would be healthier than what lots of people feed their children. At least it would have some fibre in it.

I eat a take away or a McD's every once in a while, But on a day to day basis I cook from fresh ingredients.
Where - as in which shop or supermarket - I buy my fresh ingredients is less important than the nutritional values and flavour.

I don't like the taste of factory made foods. The flavours are one dimensional imo.
Oh, and full of crap.

I love kebab meat & chips and Iceland party food, I also love Michelin starred dining. No reason you can't love both.

I do notice people doing this but I also notice almost inverse food snobbery where people ridicule people and slag them off for going to nice restaurants ("You must be an idiot paying all that for tiny portions of weird food when you can go to a carvery for £3.99" etc etc.)

Personally I like nice restaurants and home cooked food but I wouldn't ridicule people who don't. Although I do fail to see why anyone would rather have ready meals than proper cooking.

I hope no one saw my "never" to take aways as snobbery - I have severe and multiple food allergies I have to control what I eat and can't always guarantee fast food establishments are safe for me to eat from. It's the same with the poshest restaurants too they just don't cater for people with life threatening allergies.

I agree it seems that inverse snobbery is just as rife.

For me food is two things - fuel to keep me going but also something I enjoy and love preparing and cooking. Sometimes I might have a ready meal for convenience but rarely find it as satisfying as a home cooked meal.

Isn't food more about choice and personnel taste rather than snobbery in most cases anyway.

I didn't see that as snobbery. On the cortrary, you were defending people on low incomes who might buy their fruit and veg in Iceland.

BIB That is how I see it too.

What other people choose to eat is up to them. We don't have many takeaways but thats because I make curry and chinese stuff at home, simply because its cheaper and we prefer the taste as we can get the spicyness etc to our preference. What I am careful about is the amount of salt in my 3-year olds diet which is one of the reasons we don't have ready meals.

There are some snobs but I'd expect people on a food and drink forum are more likely to cook from fresh and some are a bit evangelical about it. Then there's the inverse snobbery as well. I see nothing wrong with the odd bit of fast food but its hardly gourmet. Nothing wrong with it though. Everything in moderation and all that.

I have no problem with takeaways or ready meals and have them frequently (not every week but on a fairly regular basis).

I do draw at line at McDonalds/KFC though because I have an awareness (from a friend in the food industry) of the quality of meat they use.

I have no objection to ready meals or junk food occasionally, but it seems to be more and more acceptable to feed your family crap and nothing else.

Why buy a frozen pizza when you can make cheese and tomato on toast, which is probably cheaper and tastier. Home made soup, baked potatoes and stews are cheap and nutritious. I'm not saying that everyone should cook from scratch, but surely people can make some stuff themselves.

Is that like lentil soup? I make it with the water from a boiled ham, add carrots, onions, lentils and split peas. It costs almost nothing and is so tasty. I like to eat it with a sandwich made with the boiled meat. Yummy,

I really don't know why someone would be offended, just because somebody else doesn't like the place they shop.
