Some of today's kids think that Winston Churchill was the first man on the moon, so why should we be so surprised that some don't know who Paul McCartney is?

It's Skrillex. He's shit. Peddles vaguely dub-step influenced music made for American frat parties.

Remember seeing that guy being interviewed at the pre-grammys... he sounded a complete c*ck.

How he has three grammy awards is beyond me.

That's like saying nobody alive today should know who Mozart, Bach or Beethoven is
It's nothing of the sort...

As his latest abomination only confirms.

I think it says more about the musical mis-education of young people today rather than the young people themselves.
Shows like the X Factor and much of the media in this era keep drilling the words 'current' and 'relevant' into their brains.
They are pretty much taught to be ignorant of what went before and to instantly dismiss anything that isn't 'relevant' to what's 'current' right now.

When I was a teenager and later in my 20s, although there was always intense hype about the latest brand new shiniest new-fangled fad or trend there was also a healthy respect for good music that went before and it was always treated as 'relevant'. It was just as likely to find 'old' records amongst the newest stuff in my mates' record collections.

Teenagers were almost more aware and even when they were into a new thing, they still accepted that this new band they were into was at the start of their career and a small fish in a big pond. As opposed to nowadays when as soon as an act is presented to them as 'world class' by the media they just lap it up and act like blindly religious devotees on facebook and twitter getting aggressive with people if they don't find what they like 'amazing' too.

Don't get me wrong there were occasional fans back then who were perhaps just a bit too into something for the welfare of their own mental health, but they were more or a rarity as opposed to what appears to be more of the norm right now.

its not good music, merely everyone banging on about the beatles for nearly 60 years. So people are BOUND to remember them because people never shut up about them!
So everyone goes on about them but they're not good music.

Everyone else is wrong and you're right. Good to know.

It's nothing of the sort...

Mozart and Beethoven were extremely popular musicians of their age. Their songs transcended generational boundaries and had lasting mass appeal all around the world. Likewise Paul McCartney ('Yesterday' for instance being the most often covered piece of pop music of all time). Your personal opinion has no impact on that fact. I'm very sorry, you may have to get over yourself.

He's known as Skrillex, and he produces noise for a living, as emo didn't make him enough cash.

I personally believe that its the parents God-given responsibility to teach and guide their kids away from Justin Beiber, JLS, One Direction, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, as well as rap and hip-hop, etc. and nuture them in the direction of REAL music by REAL musicians!!

It is YOUR DUTY, so that we can save future generations from cultural annihilation!!!!

Everyone constantly goes on about 50 Cent, Cheryl Cole, Drake, LMFAO, etc. So does that mean they're good music too, because everybody is always talking about them?

I know who he is too, but at the age of 10 in a west indian household I didnt care who he was. I know who he is now, but saying as my family didnt listen to the beatles at all, he meant nothing to me. And i suspect most young kids of today are the same. I mean he was in a band from 60+ years ago. No shade, but c'mon. the beatles v mozart. Big difference. You learn about mozart via music at school but you know the name not necessarily all his work. Music at schools isnt high profile at all. Its an age of 90s singer...90s who? past a few years and most kids dont have a clue who anyone is. Most of my age when I was a teen (in 2004) had not much of an idea who michael jackson was. I knew, but they might've heard the name but didnt really know who he was - and boy...that trial meant EVERYONE knew who he was.
the difference is that the beatles (macca) have been a major influence on our music today...mozart et al arent unless you are a classical fan.

its not good music, merely everyone banging on about the beatles for nearly 60 years. So people are BOUND to remember them because people never shut up about them!
you are showing your naivety... yes there is a reason why the beatles are still mentioned, suggest you look them up, research, then youll understand.

The Beatles, in my opinion, are part of our cultural heritage. .
exactly! whether anyone likes them, 'gets' them, or not, the point is that factually they are the most inportant band ever in pop music...mainly because they were their at the beginning. they had the oportunity to forge new ground, they took that opportunity.

Not really. Im no fan but people keep going on about it. People go on about abba and bananarama but it doesnt make it good, music tastes are subjective. Personally i think its naff, but its up to you how you spend your money. Just because people say something doesnt make it right.
musical tastes are subjective, but what isnt is the truth about how music evolved and who was responsible for its development. you are not obliged to like the beatles, but factually they were the first group to pioneer pop/rock, setting the standard that all pop/rock groups have followed since. that isnt subjective, thats historical fact.

eh?..... are you serious?.... if parents for my generation steered us away from what they thought wasnt real music, the beatles, stones, punk, rock, etc etc etc would never have happened!

There's a difference between being spoken about in the present and still being spoken about 50 years on. Will anyone remember those artists and appreciate them in 50 years? Doubt it.

For how long will they be talking about them, though? Not 50 years after they first debuted, let me assure you. And out of interest, when did you hear someone last say "heard Cheryl Cole's new song?"

I'll not dispute that people talk about current artists a lot, but its rarely for the right reason. Cheryl Cole is a celebrity first, TV personality second, and musician a distant third.

It's not entirely subjective. Some music and musicans do turn out to be more successful and, more importantly, more influential than others. The Beatles and Abba come into that category and are more significant (over time) than many other artists.
It is subjective clearly.

I'm no fan of his but I knew he was since I was a kid (I'm 21 btw and will be 22 in a month's time). I'm surprised that the young teens haven't at least heard his Christmas song (Wonderful Christmastime) as it's played everywhere every year (:yawn.

I love the album. If you have a good sound system (and not just listening to you tube clips) it's great. Very restrained, beautifully played. The two original songs hold up to any jazz standards. (My Valentine/Only Our Hearts)
I'm not saying his voice is that of a 20 yr old anymore but compared to Rod's attack on standards, this is lovely
I'm sure a complete one off also, as he is working on a rock/pop album at the moment.
No 3 in the UK charts and certainly not an abomination.

What a stupid post, all music is real music. Why not let people listen to what they want. Cant just dismiss whole genres of music just cos you dont like them
Hip Hop is great
Dont see the big deal if u haven't heard of him really.
