You do realise Nicki Minaj is actually a musical theatre actress called Onika Maraj, and has been on the off-Broadway scene since 2002?
Also, she released the mixtapes because Young Money were the only record label interested in signing her, for her rapping. Hip hop naturally works best for rap. Now she's established, she does the music she wants.
