Elton John doesn't write most of his lyrics, Bernie Taupin does. Elton composes the music around the lyrics.

"21" has been awarded a lot of critical acclaim from the get-go. The sheer success of the album will see that it isn't forgotten anytime soon. "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep" are already considered by many as modern classics and are imprinted on the public's consciousness that they too will become staples on radio for years to come. I honestly do think "21" will be seen as a benchmark release for a female artist in the future. A lot of albums that are considered timeless now probably weren't when they were first released. I guess we're just going to have to wait 20 years or so to see.

The same can't be said for Taylor Swift. Her material is far too bland and forgettable to be talked about in 5 years time let alone 20. Who's going to give two sh!ts about "Love Story" in years to come? I hardly hear it played on the radio now and it was only released a couple of years ago. We're not exactly talking about her songwriting being on the same level as Dolly Parton. Now she's a country singer who's timeless in the strictest sense of the word. Her songwriting craps all over Taylor's inane lyrics.

What adele is doing has been done many times in the past and a lot better, dido beng the most recent example.
There is nothing ground breaking at all in the album and is certainly not a benchmark for any future female future album release.
I could easily say dido's albums were the benchmark for 21

It clearly should be a benchmark for female album releases, considering whatever she is doing with the album is clearly working as, just as you said, she is managing to get 'randoms to buy it in the supermarket' going further than the fan bases and also selling many more units than TS.

i dont think its her fault. it went a bit supernova in a ridiculous way. I mean for a time, several months, the UK had bigger 21 sales than the US, whilst RITD was at #1. I was thinking 2.5m or something not nearly 4m!!

Why , 21 is not a patch on no angel by dido, number of sales dont equal quality and 21 is maybe the best example ever of that.

The album as a whole or the songs will never stand up to the test of time. 21 has tons of filler, even adele fans have said that, to stand the test of time an album needs to be remembered for almost every track.

its pretty clear you like bland rubbish if you think that no angel is better than 21, the only decent thing dido has ever done was get a few lines in eminems stan, i dont think 21 is the greatest album ever but there are 3 classic songs 3 or 4 good ones and some filler unlike taylor swift who has yet to create a classic song or album she is mediocre in every way

Say that to Adele's six Grammys she won for '21'. Would someone get that many if it wasn't quality?
Her album has been in the top 10 for 56 weeks (number one for a lot of 'em). It's at number 3 this week.

I'll respectfully say...why do you think that?. Morning Glory is a fantastic album from start to finish and is still a regular feature in the best british album and best album of all time polls. Even american publications admit that along with Oasis' debut, it's a classic album. Dire Straits and Adele are only ones on that list i don't rate highly. Michael Jackson isn't my thing but I can't deny his impact.


I'm not familar with all of Dido's output, but I'd take White Flag over any Adele song.

What was so gratifying on Sunday night (as a huge fan) was the industry adoration for her. Her peers have put her on a pedestal based on her talent alone. And this has been happening since the Jools Holland SLY performance back in November 2010, long before the album hit the market and the sales flew through the roof.

And 21 is now at 21 weeks atop BB200, breaking the Bodyguard record. Adele now has the longest number 1 album by a female in US History. Wow.

oh my here we are again i like me some Dido but it isn't exactly groundbreaking its rather shallow and vacant in some aspects background music with a dance beat which coincidentally was entirely co-written.

21 may not be the best album it may be a little boring but it's honest and has heart and something entirely relatable to all hence why she has sold, sorry my bad i forget it was supermarket chains forcing us to buy it

And whilst i have barely listened to 21 i still remember every song on there from beginning to end

morning glory is not a patch on definately maybe which was oasis's only brilliant album apart from the masterplan, in my opinion blur, suede and pulp were the three best britpop artists, never really got the hype with oasis, i have always found them bland with terrible lyrics

Just because people buy an album dont mean its quality, she got the grammys simply because she has sold so many albums.

Morning glory is a fantastic album, its an album that will still be play in 30 years times, as every track is a classic, certainly one of the best albums in the last 20 years or so.

If you have not heard much dido try her first album no angel its one of these albums that is almost faultless from start to finish. Its technically very good from a music perspective if you like analysing songs at the basic music levels.

I was quite surprised to read that Fearless was almost 50% co-written. Maybe that's why it has sold much better than the 100% Swift-written follow up. Who knows?
