Dts
An enquiry or two-DVD players that do not bear the DTS logo (that only mention Dolby Digital)-can they play DVD's that posess DTS sound quality or not?
I have a couple of DVD's that posess DTS sound quality, and it says that the output for them if not watched with a DTS amp is PCM stereo. This isn't DTS, is it? ![]() (I have a DTS DVD player, by the way-I was just wondering-that's all! )

If it has no mention of DTS on the front of the player, changes are the disc will play, but in silence.
If it says "DTS Digital Out", you will still get silence unless you hook up to a DTS-equipped amp via a coax link or fibre-optic. If it says "DTS Surround", it normally means you can either use a DTS decoder within the DVD Player, or on an external amp. I think a DVD player will just ignore the audio formats that it doesn't recognise (valid formats being Dolby, DTS, MPEG and PCM), but should still give pictures. My DVD player supports DTS digital out only, so I have a Marantz AV amp to decode the DTS from the fibre optic link. |

Every DVD will have a basic stereo (most likely an MPEG commpressed format rather than linear PCM) soundtrack which every player can read. Any other format, DTS, Dolby or whatever will be additional "tracks" which you can switch your DVD player to read if they have the necessary decoders or can output the soundtrack via a digital (usually though not exclusively) audio connection to an external home cinema system.
So you will always get some sound, at the very least bog standard stereo (or even mono depending on the film ). If the DVD doesn't have DTS then obviously it will simply ignore the additional DTS sound track. So the answer to your question is no you won't get DTS unless the player supports it, but you will still be able to play them, just not in wonderful ( ) surround sound.

AFAIK, most AV receivers (well, my Denon can) are able to auto-detect the type of signal they're receiving: Dolby Digital or DTS. You can normally select whether you want the optional DTS soundtrack in the main menu of DVD's that do contain an optional DVD soundtrack.
Tadpole: I doubt that your DVD player is DTS only - you'd be watching most DVD's in silence if it was, as the majority of commercial DVD's are Dolby only. |

I can confirm by using a test disc that DTS is completely silent unless the DVD player can decode it.
Absolutely no ifs or buts... |

Absolutely no ifs or buts... Why would a DVD producer make a DVD that would not play on all machines (or at least as many as possible)? Absolutely no ifs or buts... |

Because if you follow that argument, Dolby Digital would not work when the DVD was set to to DTS - but it does...

'DTS Discs' are actually neither DVD's nor CD's: http://www.smr-home-theatre.org/myths/dtsmusic.html |
