icloud for pc?
Iphigenia
16-02-2012
So, thinking I might treat myself to an ipad but currently a pc user, I thought I'd get started playing with icloud, getting some of my photos up there ready.

I've followed all the instructions, downloaded icloud for pc.

I already had an apple id and it's verified
but when I try to sign in, all I get is "ID is valid but is not an icloud account". When I click on "Learn more", all it does is take me back to the download page again.

Can anyone assist, please?
Ta.

You need to activate iCloud via an iDevice (or a Mac running OSX Lion).

See here:

https://www.icloud.com/

https://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

Once you have enabled iCloud on your Apple ID via an iDevice, you can then use the iCloud Control Panel to sync photos from your PC via the "Photostream".

It looks like you can't try before you buy unless you have a Mac running the latest operating system.

From iCloud's help.

Quote:
“Before you can use iCloud, you need to sign up for an iCloud account on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5, or on a Mac running OS X Lion v10.7.2.”

Edit: Bah, too slow.

It would be rather pointless anyway if all you have at the moment is a computer... nothing else to sync the photos with!

The whole point is for syncing between iDevices (& with a PC/Mac if you want).

If you want Cloud computing on a PC there are plenty of options out there that have been around for years ......

Thanks for all the replies.

I get it now that I need an iDevice before I can activate the cloud (I'd thought that because it would install on a PC I could use it from a PC but I understand the point now).

Assuming I buy an iPad, that will be my only iDevice - though considering an iPod nano, can it access the iCloud? - my interest in the Cloud at the moment was for photo storage, rather than synching it anywhere else. So before I rush to purchase:
Can photos be stored in the iCloud and called down/viewed on the iPad?
and
Can the iPad connect to a digital projector for giving illustrated presentations and talks?

The quote I posted only only mentions an iPod touch as a compatible device. Does an iPod Nano have WiFi access these days? Otherwise how will you connect to iCloud

You can buy video adapters for an iPad to output to HDMI or VGA so provided the projector has one of those input sockets you should be good to go.

I haven't used iCloud much so I can't really comment on if it will do what you want.

You can use the same id for all your apple devices, which is recommended rather than have many different ones, then sharing is easy.
Remember that the ios device backup uses a small amount of your 5gb free cloud account and yes you can store your photos and share easily on the cloud

You will need the cable listed here, projectors tend to use VGA.
I have the hdmi one and its great on a large TV.

Also, worth considering box.net and dropbox who both also offer 5gb of stoarge and offer good cloud storage.

The whole point of the iCloud is that it is for iDevices.

Even if you have an iPad it is of still important to know how to use things on a universal basis.
Dropbox and other things are universal so will always give the user other options.
For now, most google stuff is universal too though tit for tat manoeuvring might eventually hit this for six.

That's what I don't know about the Nano. I'm only just beginning to think about i-ing my various devices as they need replacing or just treating myself. Thankyou, I'll research the iPods a bit more.

Thanks for that - although the link was broken. I understand what you say though.

I'll investigate these, thankyou. I have vstuff backup and storage, currently disabled because it snarled up my computer. I'm guessing it's the same kind of thing? Hoping iCloud - or any of the others - might be better.

Thankyou for all the replies.

As I understand it, icloud is more for temporary storage rather than 'proper' cloud based storage - it only keeps your last 1000 photos in the cloud, and only for 30 days.

Handy if you don't want to be bothered with manually transferring new photos from your ipad to pc, but otherwise, not that handy

You sure about that? If that is the case, it renders icloud pretty useless for storage.

not sure no. but that appears to be what the description here says:
http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html

Quote:
“ every single photo you take appears in a special Photo Stream album that holds your last 1000 photos. .....
iCloud stores new photos for 30 days, so you have plenty of time to connect your iOS device to Wi-Fi and make sure you always have your most recent shots handy.”

Despite the name, icloud is more of a syncing service, not an additional place to store stuff. So less of a direct competitor to Flickr, Smugmug, Picasa, etc.

I know. As I said in the post you replied to, the whole point of iCloud is that it is for syncing between iDevices.

It's not meant for storage.

The whole point of it is iDevice syncing (and backups).

Photostream isn't for storage, it's simply so that if you take or download a photo on one iDevice it will sync with all other iDevices (and PC/Mac).

Thankyou, this is all very interesting, and will help me not to make unhelpful choices.

Question 1: (Paul) Do you mean Picasa offers a cloud storage system? I hadn't realized that, I'll go and check.

Question 2: If I wanted to use my iPad for slideshow talks through a projector (book me now, I'm cheap ) what would be the best way to store the images? I've been told that there's not a huge amount of storage on an iPad, which is why I'd been imagining having, say 6-10 "talks" stored in a cloud and being able to access any one temporarily.

Thanks.

yup. picasaweb.google.com. Not as feature-packed as the other I mentioned (IMHO) but if you've got an android phone/tablet it links the photos instantly (and largely invisibly) from the built in gallery app.
