Is the 3GS still a decent phone?
My mother has had an 2G iPhone ever since they came out, it died yesterday so she's looking for another, she likes apple and wants to stick with apple but doesn't like the price tag of the 4 and 4s, she's not into photos, doesn't need dual cores etc, she only uses the phone for playing a few apps, iPod and of course phone calls, so a 3gs would probably suit her needs ok, but the 3GS is getting on a bit, but would it suit her needs ok? What do you think? She's made it clear she doesn't want an android phone.

I'm not overly technical but my Mum has the 3G one, she is perfectly happy with it and it sounds like she does pretty much what you Mum wants to do.

I have a 3gs and think it's fine. I use it for the ipod, games, net and calls and it does me fine(I could do with a bigger memory but thats all but I could delete some of the many games I don't play) I was thinking about the 4gs but at those prices and for what I use it for it's not really worth it. I also think it looks nicer than the iphone 4 personally.

I gave my mother my 3GS and it works perfectly. There is basically nothing I can remember I can do with 4 that I could not do with the 3GS . Besides the obvious(Better graphics, battery life, etc etc) the only difference is the rotation of the camera. Don't get me wrong I think the 4 is worth every bit of money in relation to the 3GS, but as a first Iphone, or coming from the 2G, i do not think your mother, or mine, need such an upgrade. My hubby has a 4S, he's super happy with it, but in my opinion i do not think it's worth the extra money.

If the lady was happy with her 3g,then yes, she should go ahead. There are some good contract deals going around as networks clear their stocks, too.
