Well before a definitive yes or no can be established, we need to know statistics! Anyone know the sales/etc. of both artists?

Elvis is more iconic than her but he is over-rated in my opinion he was good though.

No one will eclipse Elvis or The Beatles. They are both historical icons, not just musical icons and with sales of over a billion..

In fairness, Madonna is a huge icon too, and has rightly earned her place in the record books and history!

Can someone verify these figures, please?

Over a billion each - really?

Anyway, I think Madonna has (whilst not as musically innovative) made just as big an impact culturally.

I think she's definitely among the Top 10 biggest/most influential/biggest artists of all time.

It's hard to find one female artist who hasn't claimed Madonna as some sort of inspiration - everyone from Bjork to Courtney Love to Janelle Monae to Beyoncé.

elvis pretty much created rock n roll
the beatles created modern pop, Psychedelic rock, the album as an artistic statement rather than just singles and filler, and influenced every genre of rock music, prog rock, metal etc

madonna nowhere near them

''(whilst not as musically innovative)''

But I'm sure you would agree that she has reached their status in terms of Iconography, etc. She certainly had her own ''Beatlemania'' from Like a Virgin to The Immaculate Collection. Not to mention all that controversy and the depth of her lyrical content (at least in the past, anyway).

Sales wise she's sold more. But that
Means sod all.
Quality wise she's not even close. She doesn't have anything half as good as Oliver's Army or Watching The Detectives.

Spoken like someone who hasn't heard Hanky Panky yet.

Open you heart, I'll make you love her...

Elvis, The Beatles, Madonna, MJ, The Rolling Stones.

DONE! All on the same level, the define/redifine/shaped the musical system! They shook it up and are the most iconic, prolific artists in music history ever...Madonna being the only female is a triumph in itself too! Fanbases are widespread, influence therefore has also been widespread.

So I reckon it is a definitive yes....you cannot say "no" really the main difference is however...Era and gender and genre really that are the main differences here between them...Elvis met with a tragic end a couple decades in his career while Madonna is 4 decades in and setting new records so it is tough to weigh it up really.

But those for me, and for music, culture, society are the main 5 most influencial musicians/bands/artists of all time

When Madonna dies (hopefully not for a good few decades yet!) I see no reason why she shouldn't be considered in the same league. She is classed as an icon now, so she's most definitely be considered an icon in death.

People try to belittle her success, but I see no reason why Elvis should be considered in a better league to her. They are on par at least.

I am downright offended that David Bowie isn't on that list, Mr. Pinder.

Ziggy Stardust is better and more influential than anything MJ ever put out, and that's not even going into Low or Hunky Dory.

*Tsk*

It's been 30 years. I think I've heard every single, most of her albums up till the mid 90's and, with the exception of Borderline, it's all shit. Not a single song that deserves a second listen.
And Hanky Panky, that just reminds me that the hair face ruined Dick Tracey.

Yes!
In fact picking a good Costello song is pretty much a whole fish in barrels thing.

Definitely....just because people have a preference doesnt mean that one must belittle the other...Elvis was very prolific....but never wrote a song in his life...FACT! but the songs were genius, his presence is incomparable and his influence is massive.

Now Madonna is very much the biggest influential female artist in the late 20th Century and the 21st Century....her impact is massive and yes agreed she is considered a massive icon and music legend right now. Her legacy thus far proves itself really.

And if you havent heard the Like A Prayer, Erotica, Ray Of Light, Music or American Life albums to show just how much she really transcended musical styles and opened so much analysis in her music then you dont deserve the right to hold them both and compare really

I'm (not really) sorry you feel that way. Not even 'Till Death Do Us Part? Or Justify My Love?

Yes!

Agreed on that though.

Neither did i mention Kate Bush, Prince, grace Jones, Fleetwood Mac etc etc who IMO are massively open to cultural analysis too.

And again arguments on here is based on preference "apart from Borderline its all shit..." I mean REALLY! thats not what music is all about

Really what?
With the exception of Borderline I have yet to hear a Madonna Song that wasn't a steaming pile.
I'm sure there are artists you've heard and not liked.
Obviously because you have a Ciccone Bone you think otherwise. That's your preference.
All points of view in arguements or debates are based on some sort of preference.

Madonna will have to eat a *lot* of fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches before she gets to be anywhere near as big as Elvis.

Right....so there fore you dont have to play down everything for your own ends then...if you dont like Madonna, fine....your loss. If you do great! but by all means dont play her down...i mean some really dont like Elvis either for similar reasons as to why you in particular dont like M songs.

So I am sad to hear that you cannot hear and listen to her sonvs without something of an open mind or deeper understanding but hey....thats how the world turns. Its why Whovians and the Whedonverse have debates over what Who era they liked best or what era of Buffy was best etc. At the end of the day....im not into that....the shows are the shows and i love em and music is music...to be enjoyed.

Also if i dislike an artist or something, i dont eprsonally go to a forum and post why i dont like them or those songs or whatever....not my style.

Don't play her down?
So if you dislike something you should blindly agree or keep schtoom? Yeah that's great why not turn the world into a giant appreciation thread where the only folk who talk are the folk who like stuff and those who don't look silently at the ground.
Nonsense.
If someone doesn't like some one or the work of someone then they have just as much right to call it 'shit' as some who loves it has to call it 'great'

And there's no closed mind or lack of deeper understanding, it's
Madonna not Nietzsche, I just don't like what I've heard. It's fairly pop stuff and the 80's stuff, productionwise, has not aged well. Although, in her defence, very few 80's productions have aged well.
