Now i don't see how considering they were not the first to ever use this. NeoNode were.....

Motorola since claim they will appeal the ruling however i don't think its going to be an issue now.

Since Google are about to take over Motorola they will of course be using Android on all their phones which in Ice Cream Sandwich they have the new face unlock feature so negates the slide to unlock.

I do sometimes think apple have the judges in their pockets.....

The Patent was awarded (I believe) in 2010. Loads of people had been using this prior to that..... Dont see how you can go off and Patent somthing that is already 'in the wild'.

It would be like me going off and patenting 'a drink that is brown' and suing Coke, Pepsi, All types of coffee/tea and even Bovril !

I wonder if anyone owns the patent for a device you look at or listen to?

The whole patent system is in dire need of a massive overhaul. There's far too much patent-trolling going on these days. People with technical experience and common sense should be awarding patents, not pen pushing legal suits IMHO.

Historically I'm sure it was good business for the patent office gave these so that companies could have a trademarked name(like the words 'slide to unlock'). They just never expected anyone to sue over it.

No doubt Apple will have tried to patent most on screen buttons and knobs too.

That's the other stupidity about all of this - they grant patents for stuff that's already out because they take so damn long to look at it. Either the USPTO has a horrendous backlog of stuff, or their processes for examining something just take too long.

Imagine if any of you went into work today and your boss gave you something to do and you said, "OK I'll have that for you in 2017!" He'd laugh and then hand you a P45!

It's all a conspiracy. Only the public Knows the truth. Maybe all judges are Apple users and were reviewing the case in their Ipads. That's why Apple won. All Courts are corrupt, but just if they award Apple any win, if not they are allright.

Now, try again without the smartarse reply....

How do you explain the fact it has been used by a company called NeoNode years before apple came along with it?

Well funnily enough Google is still waiting on a patent for a notification bar (now in IOS5) (filed 3 years ago)
http://phandroid.com/2012/02/17/goog...-09-fun-facts/

The other thing I saw in response to this story was someone pointing out that the US Patent and Trademark Office recently had an exhibition on Apple and Steve Jobs patents.....not that they're close or anything

http://www.slashgear.com/steve-jobs-...-now-23197633/

“This exhibit commemorates the far-reaching impact of Steve Jobs’ entrepreneurship and innovation on our daily lives,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO David Kappos. “His patents and trademarks provide a striking example of the importance intellectual property plays in the global marketplace.”

They won the case against Motorola. What do you want me to say? That judges are stupid and there is a conspiracy to favour Apple? It's quite simple and self explanatory why they won. It's patent law.
But really I'm not surprised there is bafflement Apple won, a huge percentage of of DS believes with all their might that no smartphone in the market bears even a slight resemblance to the template created by Apple. It's quite funny this sort of selective blindness seem to be concentrated here, it really has not spread to courts.

This win only applies to the German market. It would be interesting to see if other markets agree with this ruling or not.

Ah see this is where people like you suffer selected blindness.

Apple did not create that template. LG did. NeoNode also first started using slide to unlock.

Still going to ignore those facts?

What facts? Apple won. More factual than this is impossible.
And yes, I forgot the golden rule, in DS, but just in DS, all smartphones in the market are distinctly different from the Apple template.

And we'd be right seeing as all modern smart-phones bear a resemblance to the template first created by LG.

Come on this is quite comic, everytime i came to DS it's like i step into a parallel world that bears no resemblance to any discussion about technology anywhere.
I quite like it actually, sometimes it's a good read, but this thread was getting to much into conspiracy theory territory, and that is stupid, it's quite obvious why Apple won, and Motorola would have used much better arguments than any you can provide in this thread.

not like the industry wasn't heading that way anyway. A few weeks after iphone announced, Samsung also announced this:

He who has the money, has the power.

The whole patent system needs some serious reform because at this stage it is almost stifling innovation rather than encouraging it.
