A question for horse owners

In the field over the road are two large cream colour horses. They are always hanging over the gate for titbits/attention and if I have time I stop and lean on the gate. One of them does something I don't undersand. It is a very tall horse so its head is about level with mine, and if I stand still it gets very close and 'eye to eye' with me and then stops. It then stands still. When I say eye to eye I mean only a couple of cm away.

My Mum used to be a riding instructor but did not know what this body language meant so I was wondering if anyone here knew. It may be just a slightly cranky horse doing cranky things but I thought I would ask.

If you turn round so that your back is to the horse, he will come right up to you. He sees the "eye-to-eye" behavior as a threat or a challenge. Or just put your head down so that he can't see your eyes.

Cheers - that sounds possible.

Can't answer your question but please don't give the horse tidbits.
You don't know if it has a medical condition ( laminitis ) , Is on a diet or it may well choke on what it is given. Horses can choke on small tidbits given.

My mare was on a strict diet and I was wondering why the weight would not shift. Turns out my mate was feeding her carrots everyday

Sorry to go on

well if you are right in front of him your are in his blind spot cant really understand from your post whether you are at an angle he can see you, otherwise he could have sight problems who knows only someone who knew the horse would know, they have general communication then they have general behaviour relating to the individual animal
