Are Teen Storylines Boring? - All Soaps
Does anyone else find that there are certain age groups in soaps that are less interesting than other age groups. I still find teenagers in soaps really uninteresting, predictable, and just not very entertaining. Especially in eastenders with their predictable love or 'getting pregnant' storylines. The most interesting age group would be 35-60 in my opinion.
Does anyone else agree?

I agree. If I wanted to watch a teen soap I would watch HO or Neighbours.
People were worried that BK would turn EE into HO when he joined. Then there seemed to be a backlash against that thinking and people said it either wouldnt happen, or it wouldnt be a bad thing if it did because apparently HO was really good under him. Frankly I dont know if EE is like HO right now, I've only ever watched about 3 episodes in the early 2000s. But I can say that the weeks that EE is very teen orientated are really dull. I guess Whit/Tyler's story is finished for a couple of weeks at least. Sharon coming back will bring focus to the middle aged I hope. Also the young cast cant keep dominating, Antler/Amira will leave. Hopefully when Tyler inevitably breaks Whitney's heart she might leave too... |

The teens are really dull. It's all about who is shagging who in relationships that last ten minutes.

Funnily enough this is exactly what i was thinking last night after the Tyler/Whitney thing. Wondering why tptb thought we gave the tiniest sh!t about this couple who basically had a five minute fling and then we were supposed to believe they were the love of each others lives.... I for one don't care and am glad it's over with, after all, Tyler will inevitably be cheating in a few months/weeks/days....
But, giving it some thought I realised that in answer to OP i guess its the younger generation that these storylines are aimed at (I'm NOT the younger generation ) and so fair play- all stories are not written and aimed at all of us, so to teenagers I would imagine their storylines (all soaps not just the Tyler/Whitney thing) are far from boring to teenagers going through similar things themselves.... Similar really to people of my age who are more interested in things that reflect my agegroup's concerns and life ... like which of my neighbours will turn out to be a serial killer, who is stealing my post, whether the new baby three doors down has been switched for a more healthy one .... that sort of thing

In EE right now I personally think the teens get too much air time while some actors get none... for example Syed has not appeared in an episode since Jan 27th while Whitney has been in virtually every episode...

![]() I'm 18, and im more interested in the older characters at the moment. The thing with the teens in EE is that nearly all of them sleep around and we aren't all like that. The only character I've ever really enjoyed in that category was Stacey. We saw her develop into a young adult with fantastic storylines, she was a good example of a teen character, but that's just my opinion. and the teen storylines at the moment are getting too much screentime compared to poor Marc who gets about two lines to say every episode he is, not that Syed is ever in it much, one of the underused actors. ![]() I think Abi is the only teen that isn't like the others |

I think it completely depends on the writing and acting for them. Take a look at Lauren's drinking story, for example. It does involve her sleeping around, yes, but that isn't the main focus and Jacqueline Jossa has done a great job with it. Then you have the likes of Whitney and Tyler which just make you want to slit your wrists.
When they are done right, the teen storylines can be interesting. The characters just need to be appealing and the plot has to be compelling. |

Depends on the character really. I don't watch Eastenders anymore, except when it's dealing with stuff like Pat's death, but I think it's really dependent on the character. Hollyoaks's current crop of teens are pretty poor, but John Paul/Craig, Hannah's anorexia and the teens generally during Kirkwood's days were all fantastic (which surprises me that he apparently can't get it right in Eastenders).
Neighbours is another example of depending on the character - anything to do with Sophie or Callum is maddening, but Tash and Chris are great characters who are two of the best on the show to watch. |

The teens I like from different soaps are...
Eastenders - Abi and Lauren. Hollyoaks - George, Tilly and Callum. Thats pretty much it.... |

It does depend on the character.
I find Lola, Jay and Ben very watchable. Lauren/ Whitney/ Lucy less so, although we've had some good stuff in the past. Abi and Liam bore me most of the time. |

Disagree totally. I find Lauren in EE really interesting to watch, the whole Katy/Chesney and Joseph thing in CS is really well done. It just depends on characters, not ages.

As others have alluded to, it depends on the writers and the actors portraying the teens.
Two problems, in my opinion... 1. To often, the actors aren't very strong and the writers are a lot older than the characters they are writing for making the characters and the stories they feature in unrealistic, clichéd and stereotypical, resulting in dull viewing. 2. Teen overdose. Neighbours suffered from it between the Summer of '07 and the Summer of '10. Thankfully, since the Summer of '10, the show has been much more balanced. It appears, having read loads of threads, that EastEnders is now suffering from a teen overdose which I wouldn't think is in the best interest of the show as it has a broad demographic. Really, no age group should be allowed to dominate any of the soaps. The best teens in Neighbours are Chris and Tash. The only decent teens in EastEnders (while I was watching it) are Abi and Jay. All of the above is only my opinion. |

Personally I think it's the same with every character! If the character is given a great, interesting storyline and the actor is good then people will want to watch! If the actor is rubbish and the plot is bad then people won't watch! It goes for all soaps and all characters really!

Whitney - good at singular storylines that don't involve her love life otherwise it all goes pair shaped, but I did like her with Fats.
Lauren - good rounded character can translate between teen and adult storylines. Lucy - I think its still to early too tell how the actress will fair I admit I'm not sure what the purpose of her character's involvement in the current storylines she just seems to be shifting between two. Ben - I don't like the character I think the whole Phil getting jailed was ridiculous and his hate of his father, his just bring the Mitchells down. Jay - the best male teen on the show, not given enough storylines and is being left too play second fiddle he has so much potential and I like the Jay and Abi relationship they need to feature a lot more reminds me a little of Ricky and Bianca in the early days. Lola - again I really don't know where they are going with her, was she just brought into give Billy some purpose but that has now seem to of dropped of the rader, her pregnancy storylines again its been badly done, dropped in and out for months on end, whats the point of it and the whose the daddy mystery which seems not to be much of a mystery if it just turns out her fumble with Ben is the result. Abi - A character we have seen grown up on screen she has a potentially good storyline with Jay it could give her more development, one of the better teenaged characters on the show. Fats - I use too not like him in the early days but he has really come along just show what a bit of character development does. Tyler and Antony - I don't think they are that bad they just need a family I don't think that David Essex leaving so early helped them but I don't think Antony pairing with Amira is a good idea, Tyler and Whitney I'm not too sure it just seems it will fizzle out. Liam - Technically only became a teenager but could he potentially have some future storylines. |

I guess teen storylines aren't always boring and there were some good ones in the past like when Sonia had a baby in EE. That was good.

thew problem is soap writers/producers think teens just have relationhsip problems or get into drugs
i would like a SL that involved teens struggling to pay uni fees and trying to find another way to pay it or domestic violence involving a teen relationship |

I am looking forward to Lauren and her drinking S/L being explored again in a few weeks time. I think I am the only one who feels this way though. At least they haven't completely dropped it and we see her mention/do it every so often but it is not crammed down our faces, it has been more of a background s/l in other peoples scenes (Whitney/Tyler ect :yawn
. It has been ongoing for quite sometime making it more realistic.

Maybe it's an age thing, but I'm certainly bored to death with all the teen angst, particularly in EE. The fact is, there's nothing new under the sun and we've all lived the boy loves girl/girl hates boy (but loves him really) routine and get sick to death of seeing it over and over again in the soaps.
Anybody over the age of 30 knows perfectly well that one day these angst-ridden teens will all grow up and stop thinking they're the centre of the universe and the world doesn't revolve around their 'love' lives. |

) and so fair play- all stories are not written and aimed at all of us, so to teenagers I would imagine their storylines (all soaps not just the Tyler/Whitney thing) are far from boring to teenagers going through similar things themselves.
