1995 Jagged Little Pill - 33 million

sharp decline with SFIJ - and then falling further further until Flavors of Entanglement sells 210,000 in the US so I'm guessing it sold 500,000 or so.....sure SFIJ was an odd (but brave) follow up....but I don't write someone off after 1 album I don't like. Flavors is my 2nd best AM record

I believe the technical term is "bandwagoners".

This is why people shouldn't be overly confident/complacent with Adele's popularity and success. You just never know.

We saw the "Thank You" video and decided one Sinead O'Connor in the world was enough and we didn't want to validate a Canadian version after we'd invested in the pissed off bitch with an ear for melody and knack for incisive lyrics.

I'm still here and still love her but she never reclaimed her success after JLP

Aside from JLP and Uninvited i've never really gotten into her stuff, just doesn't seem the same.

she obviously didn't deliver the goods. shania twain had one of these colossal hit albums with `come on over` and her sales dropped off on her next release. however, her retention rate was far better.

I've only recently got into Alanis's music but I prefer Infatuation Junkie to JLP. I think the main problem is that it's not very commercial and there were no obvious singles so she lost a lot of momentum in terms of record sales, which is very hard to regain.

Exactly I wouldn't be surprised if Adele's next album hardly did anything. Its one thing having one best selling album but its a complete other being constantly and consistantly selling huge amounts time after time, album after album. Hence why I put more faith in GaGa being around in 20 years than I do Adele!

i am not sure what gaga and adele have to do with this thread. i mentioned shania as a direct comparison based on both alanis and shania shifting 30 million plus with one album release.

I was only a kid when Jagged Little Pill came out but my parents loved it and as I result I did too. Still do. It's still regularly played on my iPod. I just never really got a feel for any of the stuff she did later.

It seems Shania is scared to release a follow-"Up" - if it flops they'll say it's Mutt Lange's success since he made her with the The Woman In Me

after 10 years its safe to assume that.

I think part of the success of Jagged Little Pill was that the mid 90's were a period of strong female singers in the charts, singing what coud be classed as female anthems. Don't forget the Spice Girls were just round the corner with thier girl power.

Not sure about the follow up, but if the OP says it was odd, that may have lost her some fans and band wagon jumpers, then if the one after was released at the end of the girl power period then the media wouldn't have been so interested.

Also, just because 33 million were sold doesn't mean she had 33 million fans, just that 33 million people were interested enough, or were persuaded by media hype to buy the album. Many people may have listened to it a couple of times and then got fed up of it, these people would never buy the follow up (and I count myself in this category)

With regards to If_U_Seek_Amy bringing Adele and Lady Gaga in the thread, I think it's all she knows about as she tries to bring them into every thread, and turn all threads into a battle between them!

anyway, i think that 32 million people got tired of alanis. because that record was huge back in the day and they just got tired of it thats why.

She also kept her best material as b-sides - the Feast On Scraps tracks are better than a lot of Under Rug Swept (same recording sessions). Also the deluxe edition disc of Flavors is better than some tracks on the normal album

She didn't really continue her huge sales or interest with BTW though just a fraction of what she had plus The fame was combined with sales of the FM too so really her next album will totally be telling.

And i love Alanis and it's sad as she has been continually brilliant JLP URW SCC and Junkie afre all great albums and its a crime FOE basically passed under the radar great artist

I appologise for saying you bought Adele into the thread, but you can't deny that you bring Gaga into every thread possible!

I really like "Jagged Little Pill", "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" and "Under Rug Swept". The latter should have been bigger than what it ended up being as it contained some her best material like "Hands Clean" and "Utopia". "Supposed" is a somewhat dark and difficult album to listen to after its radio friendly predecessor but it's still a great album. Saying that, it was a little too long and could have done with a few tracks being held off and used as b-sides.

I did lose interest around "So-Called Chaos" and didn't really like most of the tracks on it except "Everything". I've also had a listen to her first two albums which have some OK pop songs on them. I honestly don't think Alanis cares about what she sells or how her music is received critically. No one expected her to become as big as she did with "Jagged" in 1995. I think "Supposed" was written as a reaction to her sudden worldwide fame and success and how uncomfortable she was by it all. She must have known that the record wasn't as commercially appealing and wouldn't sell as well. She does things on her terms.

I like an album, doesn't mean I'm a fan. Maybe they were fans of the album or the singles and not the artist.

LOVE JLP and SFIJ but can understand why the second album lost her so many fans. It's not particularly commercial and is extremely long.

URS is a very underrated album and deserved more commercial success.

Sadly after being a huge fan (have seen her live twice) I felt SCC and FOE was a bit poor. I loved Strightjacket, Not As We and Orchid from Flavors but that was about it.

Apparently a new record is due in 2012, as an overall fan of her work, I will give it a listen.

Incidentally, did anyone ever go on the 'Alanis Lyric Generator' website? You use to put in the names of people, objects, food etc... that you didn't like as well as a few descriptive words and it would create an Alanis song for you. Hilarious!!

When artists have massive albums sales with one album it almost always results in failure in the future.

The same question will be asked in a few years time with Adele, its far better to sell a decent amount of albums over a period of time then a lot of albums in one hit.

Why is is better if the other albums are poor in standard.
