The Alanis Morisette (sp?) thread got me thinking about artists who have just disappeared. I remember Dido was huge at one point and then she just disappeared and never came back. Duffy is another. Can you think of any?

Well, in addition to Alanis Morissette, Dido and Duffy, I'd say James Blunt, Norah Jones, Shania Twain, maybe KT Tunstall too. Does Lauren Hill qualify?

All on different levels of course, and some have had consistent but understated success following their peak, but they all disappeared/saw drastic decrease in interest and exposure.

Well, Justin Timberlake peaked, then did a couple of collaborations and then disappeared completely.

I think Joss Stone was pretty big after her 2nd album and then it all kind of fell flat, but I'm not sure.

And I wasn't born back then, but I think Toni Braxton went from global superstar to irrelevant B-lister in a matter of months.

Also what about Corinne Bailey Rae? Her 2nd album sold moderately well and she even got a Mercury nomination, but there's not any buzz about her right now.

Glenn the band's guitarist / songwriter plays guitar on a track from new north yorkshire band The Conspirators - it's called 'Jekyll & Hyde' and is quite catchy!
Also Dodgy are now back together and have a new album out v v soon!!
Louise Wener is an author now.

I actually liked KT Tunstall's last album, Lost is a very good song

Debbie Harry did a disappearing act in the 80s after Blondie split up to look after her husband & bandmate Chris Stein, who was very ill at the time. She resumed her solo career in '86 to moderate success and reformed with Blondie in the mid 90s, they've been a popular live act ever since.

I doubt Kate Nash will ever be as successful commercially as she was in 2007 again, but she's good live so I think she will still maintain a fan-base and have a successful career.

You would think but despite being British, it seems the British press or most reports have failed to mention that Corinne also won a grammy on Sunday night as well.

Was she ever 'huge' though? I'm not sure but her second album is incredible, should have done a lot better,

Oh no she wasn't ever huge but her first album received massive acclaim and success but nothing after that.

To be fair I wouldn't say he has disappeared, he has just changed his direction and been focussing on acting instead and been in some big movies like The Social Network.

Well, her debut album sold 5 million copies and the 4 singles she released back then all reached the UK's top 40 and charted all over Europe, so she was pretty big. Her sophomore was by no means a flop, but it sold considerably less and she had no successful singles.

Record labels are always looking for the next new thing... once an artist has been out there and done it, and the hiatus finishes, it is very difficult for an artist to go back into the limelight. To keep being current...
Tough industry...

I think all of the above fell victim to the end of the brit pop era. The only real survivors there were Blur & Oasis
