What I mean by de recasting is when a character has been replaced/recast and then in the future when the character has left, the producers decide to go back to the original.

This happened with Sam Mitchell in EastEnders:

Daniella - Kim - Daniella.

Has this ever happened before? And has there ever been a case where the decast is re-cast again, i.e. Daniella - Kim - Daniella - Kim.

I want Kim to return as Sam Mitchell.

I know it is happening in Corrie soon with Gordon Clegg (Betty's son).

Bill Kenwright, the original actor, is returning for Betty's funeral, but he was played by another actor on several occaisions a few years back.

Billie Jackson in EastEnders was played by Devon Anderson in the 90s. When Billie returned for Sonia and Martin's wedding in 2004 he was played by a different actor but when he returned in 2010 Devon was back playing him.

It could possibly happen with the original Lauren in EE. The current actress may want to go on to bigger and better things in a couple of years.

And who could forget Miss Ellie in Dallas?
Total character change - and appearance - then back to her normal frumpy look!

I know, I preferred Sam under her. I don't get why they didn't bring Kim back instead of Daniella if they wanted Sam again- i know she was the original but imo they are very different and its like they're two separate characters who just share the same identity and family and so on.

It didn't happen with Hayley. Ella Scott Lynch played the character till Hayley left.

With Libby it was a temporary recast as Kym was ill.

Don't think it happens all that often in UK Soaps but is quite common in Australian and US Daytime Soaps. And also Miss Ellie is the most notable in the US Prime Time soaps. I think that was to do with Donna Reed being so mis-cast and as a result very unpopular. Would they have done it otherwise - who knows?

The funniest I saw was in the brilliant 'Sons & Daughters' - when they wrote Pat the Rat out of it....replaced her (after plastic-surgery) as Alison Carr. Then she met her "twin sister" (played by the original actress!!).
It was still a brilliant soap nonetheless!!

Jill Foster Abbott in 'The Young and the Restless'. Brenda Dickson originated the role. When she left in 1980 Bond Gideon briefly played Jill, followed by Deborah Adair for three years. Brenda Dickson returned as Jill in 1983 and continued until 1987. (In 1986 Adair returned as Jill for one week when Dickson was ill.)

Jess Walton has played Jill since 1987.

In Dynasty, originally the character of Steven Colby was played by an actor called Al Corley, but he left after two seasons and was replaced by Jack Colman. The chance in appearance was explained by plastic survey after an oil rig explosion, but Al Corey returned to the role much later in the Dynasty reunion miniseries without explanation.

In Neighbours Cheryl Carpenter was also temporarily played by a different actress and so was a character in Home & Away, can't remember her name though...

And if we can include non-soaps, or even non-TV programmes then the most famous one must be James Bond, who went from being Sean Connery to George Lazenby and back to Sean Connery again and then onto Roger Moore for a while before one more appearance by Sean Connery and then back to Roger Moore again.

Thanks for the replies guys. This is my favourite re-cast, re-cast, de-cast, de-cast, de-cast, re-cast.

H&A did it a few times in the 90's when actors got sick and were heavily involved in storylines that the writers didnt want to have to rewrite. It happened with Selina, Rebecca and Ailsa. Thank God they dont do it anymore!

I just thought of another non-soap one.

The role of Roseanne's eldest daughter Becky was swopped around between two actresses for quite a while and it became a running joke in the series. Both actresses even appeared, dancing together as the credits rolled at the end of one episode.

And in the US Sitcom Roseanne, the part of Roseanne's daughter (not Darlene the other one), was shared between two different actresses who switched often.

Edit to add: Looks like I am too slow a typer! Was beaten to it

Deborah Adair was the first Jill I saw in 'The Young and the Restless', but I did love Brenda Dickson's return - her Jill was more wicked, driven. I even saw the first episode of her return with the voiceover: 'Brenda Dickson returns today, as Jill... Foster... Abbott!'

Dickson's Jill was even immortalised: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LkNWS74D9M

Towards the end of Sally being in H&A, they showed the original Pippa in flashbacks and photos as well as the 'new' Pippa

I notice most of these de recasts are mainly AmericanAustralian soaps!! Lol

I remember when it happened with Neighbours Cheryl and H&A's Selina when the actresses were ill! Oh it was sooooo embarrassing!!! You can tell they don't have the same budget/time in Oz as we do here otherwise they'd just simply change the scripts and send the character to a sick relative etc rather than replace them for a few ep's which completely destroys credibility

Totally. Australian soaps were always 2 or 2.5 hours a week and with budgets (and ratings) much lower than UK soaps.

Nowadays Aust shows seem less willing to do the last minute recasts and instead do a minor rewrite like with Neighbours' Kyle-->Dane.

I think with H&A, it's that it's cast is about a third of the size of the UK soaps so when someone fell ill and was heavily involved in stories, they couldnt rewrite months worth of scripts as such notice. In the UK soaps, cast have big stories and fade in the background for months once they're over but in H&A the character is constantly involved.

Yeah I guess so! In the UK ,even though it's a pain, it's easier for them to rewrite scripts if an actor falls ill, because of the amount of cast members to 'cover' them, whereas Oz actors tend to be in every other ep!! I don't see the Oz soaps nowadays but I remember when Doreen from Prisoner Cell Block H played Cheryl in Neighbours for a few eps back in the 90's!! Oh it was soooooo cringey, it must have been so hard for the actors who played Lou, Dannii and Brett to keep a straight face!!! Lol
